British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Monday called for an immediate end to the Iranian government’s violent crackdown on nationwide protests, which has led to the killing of at least 648 people.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Cooper described the actions against demonstrators as “horrific.”
“The killing & brutal repression of peaceful protesters in Iran is horrific,” the Foreign Secretary stated.
Cooper confirmed that she had communicated directly with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi to address the situation.
“I have spoken to (Iranian) Foreign Minister (Abbas) Aragchi and told him directly: the Iranian government must immediately end the violence, uphold fundamental rights and freedoms, and ensure British nationals are safe,” she said.
