Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that its air defenses shot down 175 Ukrainian drones overnight across southwestern regions, as both Moscow and Kyiv reported fresh attacks on key targets.
The developments highlight an intensifying phase of the war, with both sides increasingly relying on drone strikes against infrastructure.
Russia Reports Large-Scale Drone Interceptions
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense systems intercepted 175 Ukrainian drones during the night.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also reported that nine drones targeting the capital were shot down between overnight hours and early morning.
These figures could not be independently verified.
Volgograd Attack Leaves Injuries
Authorities in Russia’s Volgograd region said a Ukrainian drone strike injured 10 people and damaged industrial facilities.
Regional governor Andrei Bocharov stated that air defense systems responded to the attack, which targeted an industrial site in the city.
He confirmed that all injured individuals were taken to hospital and that their lives were not in danger. No residential buildings were reported damaged, and emergency crews quickly contained small fires at the site.
Ukraine Claims Strike on Military-Linked Facility
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces carried out a strike on a major industrial facility in Volgograd.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky said the Titan-Barrikady complex had been targeted, describing it as a “key industrial facility” involved in producing artillery systems and military equipment.
Ukraine’s General Staff added that the site manufactures components for missile systems, including equipment linked to the Iskander-M platform.
Escalation of Drone Warfare
Recent days have seen a notable escalation in the use of drones by both Russia and Ukraine, with strikes targeting:
– Industrial infrastructure
– Military facilities
– Energy-related sites
The increased reliance on drones reflects a broader shift in tactics as the conflict continues.
Information Remains Unverified
Since the start of the war in February 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have issued frequent reports on military developments.
However, due to the ongoing conflict, many claims—particularly regarding casualties and equipment losses—remain difficult to verify independently.
