Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump has a “wish of conquering Greenland,” following talks held at the White House.
Speaking after the meeting, Rasmussen emphasized that American control of the autonomous Danish territory is “absolutely not necessary.”
“We didn’t manage to change the American position,” Rasmussen said. “It’s clear that the president has this wish of conquering Greenland. And we made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of the kingdom.”
The Danish Foreign Minister called on Washington to pursue “respectful” cooperation regarding the strategic Arctic island, which remains under Copenhagen’s control.
