Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivers a statement in the media briefing room at 9 Downing Street in central London on January 19, 2026. Starmer said a "trade war is in no one's interest" on January 19, after US President Donald Trump vowed to hit Britain and European countries with tariffs over their support for Greenland.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described recent comments by Donald Trump regarding NATO forces in Afghanistan as “insulting” and “appalling” on Friday. Starmer’s statement was a response to Trump’s claim that allied forces avoided front-line duties.

“I consider President Trump’s remarks to be insulting and frankly appalling, and I’m not surprised they’ve caused such hurt to the loved ones of those who were killed or injured,” Starmer stated.

The Prime Minister also suggested that an apology would be appropriate, adding that if he had misspoken in a similar manner, “I would certainly apologise.”
