U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Lebanon and Israel have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough in the escalating conflict between the two neighboring countries. Trump disclosed the agreement through his Truth Social platform, stating that both the Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have committed to halting military operations effective immediately.

The ceasefire is set to begin at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Thursday, equivalent to midnight Beirut time, according to Trump’s announcement. This development follows intensive diplomatic efforts by the Trump administration, including discussions between senior U.S. officials and leaders from both nations aimed at achieving sustainable peace in the region.

Key Details of the Ceasefire Agreement

Trump outlined the specifics of the agreement through his social media statement: “I just had excellent conversations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two leaders agreed to begin a 10-day ceasefire, starting at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, to achieve peace between their countries.”

The agreement represents the first direct engagement between Lebanon and Israel at the highest political level in 34 years. The two nations held their first official meeting since 1990 on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio present as a mediator and witness to the historic encounter.

U.S. Role in Brokering the Deal

Trump emphasized his administration’s instrumental role in facilitating the agreement, directing Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Razin Cain to work closely with both Israeli and Lebanese officials to secure a lasting peace settlement.

Trump highlighted his track record in international conflict resolution, stating: “I have had the honor of resolving nine wars around the world, and this will be the tenth war. Let’s work on accomplishing it.”

Israeli and Lebanese Responses to Ceasefire

Hebrew media outlets reported Thursday that the Israeli military has begun preparations to implement the ceasefire. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz stated that “the Israeli occupation army is preparing to stop firing in Lebanon starting at 7 p.m. Thursday,” aligning with the announced 5 p.m. Eastern Time deadline when converted to local Beirut time.

The Lebanese presidency issued an official statement confirming the agreement and reaffirming President Aoun’s gratitude for Trump’s diplomatic efforts. The statement noted that Aoun urged Trump to accelerate efforts toward achieving the ceasefire as quickly as possible, to which Trump responded by reiterating his commitment to meeting Lebanon’s request for an immediate halt to hostilities.

Historical Significance of the Direct Talks

The resumption of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel after 34 years of absence represents a watershed moment in regional diplomacy. The presence of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Tuesday’s meeting in Washington underscored the Biden administration’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and preventing further escalation of the conflict.

Lebanese officials emphasized that the ceasefire aims to achieve not only an immediate halt to military operations but also to establish conditions for long-term peace and stability in the region, laying groundwork for a broader peace process.

International Support for Ceasefire Efforts

Beyond U.S. mediation, other international actors have expressed support for achieving peace in Lebanon. Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon Chen Chuandeng met with Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations and pledge China’s support for stability in Lebanon.

During the meeting, Ambassador Chen stated: “We support all efforts aimed at achieving stability in Lebanon and hope that solutions will be just, sustainable, and respected by all parties.” He added that China is preparing to send humanitarian assistance to Lebanon to support the country during the current crisis.

Chinese Humanitarian Support

The Chinese ambassador informed Minister Salameh of humanitarian aid shipments from China en route to Lebanon. This gesture reflects broader international recognition of Lebanon’s humanitarian needs amid the ongoing conflict and demonstrates support from major regional powers for Lebanese recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Ambassador Chen also discussed progress on the National Conservatory project in Dbayeh, funded by the Chinese government, emphasizing its cultural significance for Lebanon as a major cultural center in the Middle East.

Challenges Ahead for Sustaining the Ceasefire

While the 10-day ceasefire represents a positive development, significant challenges remain in converting this temporary truce into a permanent peace agreement. Both Lebanese and Israeli officials must navigate deep-rooted grievances, security concerns, and regional complications involving non-state actors and foreign powers with interests in the conflict.

The Trump administration has indicated its intention to use the 10-day period to negotiate a lasting settlement, with high-level officials tasked with working continuously with both sides to identify areas of common ground and resolve outstanding disputes.

Conclusion:

The announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel marks a critical juncture in efforts to de-escalate one of the Middle East’s most volatile conflicts. President Trump’s diplomatic intervention, facilitated through direct talks with both Lebanese and Israeli leadership, has produced the first concrete agreement between the two nations in decades. While the sustainability of this ceasefire depends on careful implementation and continued international pressure, the resumption of direct dialogue after 34 years offers a glimmer of hope for regional stability. The coming 10 days will be crucial in determining whether this temporary truce can evolve into a durable peace framework that addresses the legitimate security concerns of both nations.
