Iran attacks Gulf states missiles drones

The screen of a GPS attached to the dashboard of a vehicle as residents of Dubai face GPS disruptions on March 9, 2026, in Dubai. The United Arab Emirates decried that it was being targeted "in a very unwarranted manner" in the war, stressing it would "not partake in any attacks against Iran", which has lashed out at Gulf countries seen as US allies.

Iran launched a fresh wave of coordinated missile and drone attacks across the Persian Gulf on Monday, March 10, 2026, targeting multiple Gulf Cooperation Council nations and critical energy infrastructure. The strikes, which killed at least one person in Bahrain and injured dozens across the region, represent a continuation of Tehran’s response to the US-Israeli bombing campaign that began on February 28.

The attacks struck the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait simultaneously, with air defense systems across the region working to intercept incoming threats. Iran also fired ballistic missiles into Turkish airspace, prompting NATO interception and a stern diplomatic warning from Ankara. The coordinated nature of the assault underscores Iran’s strategy to overwhelm regional air defenses through volume and simultaneity of fire.

Fatalities and Injuries Across Multiple Nations

Bahrain’s interior ministry reported that an Iranian attack on a residential area in the capital, Manama, killed one person and injured others in what officials described as a “blatant Iranian attack targeting a residential building.” The strike highlighted the civilian toll of the expanding conflict.

On the island of Sitra in Bahrain, another Iranian drone attack injured 32 people overnight, according to health ministry officials. The wounded included four “serious cases,” including a 17-year-old girl with severe head and eye injuries and a two-month-old baby requiring urgent medical care.

The United Arab Emirates reported that two Emirati servicemen were killed after their military helicopter crashed due to technical malfunction while performing national duty. This brings the total death toll in the Gulf region to at least 23 people since Iran began its attacks, including 10 civilians and seven US service members.

Strategic Targeting of Energy Infrastructure

Iran’s strikes specifically targeted critical petroleum facilities, aiming to disrupt regional oil production and supply chains. Bahrain’s sprawling Al Ma’ameer oil facility was directly hit, causing fire and significant damage. The attack forced Bahrain’s state-owned energy company Bapco to declare force majeure, a legal clause indicating circumstances beyond the company’s control that may prevent meeting export obligations.

Bapco stated: “The group operations have been affected by the ongoing regional conflict in the Middle East and the recent attack on its refinery complex.” The declaration joined similar announcements from Qatar and Kuwait, signaling that multiple Gulf energy producers face supply disruptions due to the conflict.

The targeting of energy infrastructure, combined with broader Middle East war risks, sent oil prices soaring. Crude oil reached its highest level since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, triggering sharp declines in Asian stock markets as investors responded to fears of prolonged supply disruptions. Market volatility intensified as traders assessed the potential impact of sustained Iranian attacks on global energy supplies.

Air Defense Operations and Interception Rates

Gulf air defense systems engaged multiple waves of Iranian fire simultaneously. Qatar reported intercepting 17 ballistic missiles and six drones with no reported casualties. The UAE detected 15 ballistic missiles, successfully destroying 12 while three fell into the sea, and intercepted 17 of 18 drones launched from Iran.

Bahrain reported intercepting 102 missiles and 173 drones since the start of the war, continuing what officials described as efforts “to confront successive waves of heinous Iranian terrorist attacks.” Kuwait’s defense ministry announced interception of a missile and drone attack and was working to counter additional salvos throughout the day.

Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry reported that the kingdom intercepted and destroyed four separate waves of drones heading toward the Shaybah oil field in the country’s southeastern region, demonstrating coordinated air defense across multiple Gulf nations.

NATO Interception of Iranian Missiles Over Turkey

NATO air defense systems intercepted a second Iranian ballistic missile fired into Turkish airspace on Monday, prompting a stern diplomatic response from Ankara. Turkey’s defense ministry confirmed the interception: “A ballistic munition launched from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was neutralised by NATO air and missile defence assets in the eastern Mediterranean.”

This marked the second Iranian missile to enter Turkish airspace in five days. NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart stated: “NATO has again intercepted a missile heading to Turkiye. NATO stands firm in its readiness to defend all Allies against any threat.”

Fragments from the intercepted missile fell in open territory near Gaziantep, approximately 200 kilometers east of Adana, with no injuries reported. A resident told media: “We were sitting at home when suddenly we heard a big bang. Since there’s a construction site here, we thought the noise was coming from there. But when we came and looked, we saw the missile fragment.”

Turkish Diplomatic Response and Incirlik Security

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a sharp warning to Iran, stating: “Despite our sincere warnings, extremely wrong and provocative steps continue to be taken that will jeopardise Turkey’s friendship.” He warned that Turkey would “take the necessary measures to defend our nation” and urged Iran to avoid “persistence and stubbornness in wrongdoing.”

Turkey summoned the Iranian ambassador over the incident and closed the US consulate in Adana, advising all non-essential American staff and family members to leave. The US State Department subsequently ordered non-emergency US government employees and family members to depart Saudi Arabia due to safety concerns.

Incirlik Air Base, a critical NATO facility hosting US troops for decades, faced renewed scrutiny as missile threats extended into Turkish airspace. Turkey responded by deploying six F-16 fighter jets to Northern Cyprus as a precautionary security measure.

Diplomatic Contacts Between Iran and Turkey

Despite the escalation, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke with Erdogan by telephone late Monday, offering to establish a joint inquiry into the missile incidents. Iranian media quoted Pezeshkian as saying the United States and Israel wanted to “sow discord” between Iran and its neighbors, and proposing a joint investigation to “clear up the misunderstanding.”

The diplomatic outreach, while notable, came after Turkey had summoned the Iranian ambassador and warned of consequences for continued provocations.

US Diplomatic and Military Response

The United States ordered the evacuation of embassy staff from Saudi Arabia following repeated Iranian attacks on American diplomatic facilities across the region. The State Department noted in its travel advisory: “Americans in southeast Turkey are strongly encouraged to depart now,” citing safety risks from the escalating missile and drone attacks.

Drones had previously struck the US embassy in Riyadh and caused damage at US diplomatic missions in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The evacuations reflect American assessment that the conflict poses direct threats to personnel in vulnerable locations.

Broader Context of Iranian Retaliation

The coordinated attacks represent Iran’s systematic response to the US-Israeli bombing campaign that began on February 28. Gulf countries have borne much of the brunt of Tehran’s retaliation, despite their geographic distance from direct US-Israeli operations. The targeting of civilian populations, residential areas, and energy infrastructure indicates Iran’s strategy to impose economic and humanitarian costs on nations aligned with US interests.

Conclusion:

Iran’s coordinated attacks on multiple Gulf states and strikes into Turkish airspace on March 10 demonstrate the expanding geographic scope of the Middle East conflict. With air defense systems across the region engaged in intense interception operations, multiple nations experiencing casualties and infrastructure damage, and global oil markets responding to supply disruption fears, the escalation shows no signs of abating. The diplomatic outreach from Iran’s president to Turkey suggests some effort toward de-escalation, but the persistence of attacks and Turkish warnings indicate the cycle of strike and response will likely continue in the near term.
