United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Israel’s demolition of the UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem, demanding an immediate halt to the action, according to his spokesman.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, spokesman Farhan Haq stated that Guterres considers the UN premises to be “inviolable and immune” from interference.
“The secretary-general urges the government of Israel to immediately cease the demolition of the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound, and to return and restore the compound and other UNRWA premises to the United Nations without delay,” Haq said.
The statement addresses the ongoing demolition of the headquarters for the UN agency specifically tasked with aiding Palestinian refugees, located in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.
