The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has called for an immediate cessation of all military activities in Syria. The statement on Monday followed a recent ceasefire agreement between Syrian interim authorities and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
“The ceasefire between Syrian interim authorities and SDF are vital steps to prevent the country from sliding back into turmoil,” Kallas stated, emphasizing the need for stability. “De-escalation commitments must be fully respected, and civilians must be protected.”
The statement also outlined the EU’s long-term objectives for the nation, reiterating that the goal is to achieve “a genuinely inclusive political transition in Syria.” According to Kallas, this transition requires the integration of military, security, and civilian bodies into unified state structures.
Kallas concluded by highlighting the importance of political and local participation, adding that the “full protection of Kurdish rights is also crucial” for a lasting resolution.
