World number one Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to his first Australian Open final after defeating German third seed Alexander Zverev in a monumental semi-final battle that lasted five hours and 27 minutes. The Spaniard secured the victory with a final score of 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (3/7), 6-7 (4/7), 7-5.

The match was marked by high-stakes tennis and a moment of controversy in the third set. At 4-4, Alcaraz pulled up with apparent cramping in his right thigh and received a medical timeout at the changeover. The decision drew anger from Zverev, as tournament rules do not permit medical timeouts for muscle cramping alone. Zverev remonstrated with officials, later telling reporters he told them it was “bullshit.” However, he also stated, “I think this is one of the best battles there ever was in Australia. It doesn’t deserve to be the topic now.”

Alcaraz took a commanding two-set lead before Zverev mounted a comeback, winning two consecutive tiebreaks to force a deciding fifth set. Despite his physical struggles, Alcaraz credited his ability to persevere to his mentality. “I always say that you have to believe in yourself no matter what,” Alcaraz said. “Basically it was one of the most demanding matches that I have ever played in my short career.”

In the final set, Zverev gained an early advantage with a break to go up 2-0. He later served for the match, but Alcaraz broke back to level at 5-5 before breaking again to seal the dramatic win. Zverev admitted he had nothing left physically. “My legs stopped pushing upward, that’s the way it is,” he said.

With this win, Alcaraz becomes the youngest man to reach the final of all four Grand Slams. He will face either Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s championship match. For Zverev, the search for his maiden Grand Slam title continues.
