President Xi Jinping invited Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday to visit China, at the start of the first formal talks between the countries’ leaders since 2017.
“We welcome you to visit China again in your capacity as prime minister of Canada,” Xi said at the talks at the APEC summit in South Korea, according to an audio recording.
“I also welcome the invitation to come to China to further the dialogue and I very much look forward to doing so,” Carney said, adding he looked forward to “constructive and pragmatic dialogue… to help build a more sustainable, inclusive international system”.
