White House Claims US Pressure Halted 800 Executions in Iran

Iranians residing in Armenia hold a demonstration in solidarity with Iranian protestors, outside the Iranian embassy in Yerevan on January 15, 2026. A protest movement across Iran, initially sparked by economic grievances, has turned into one of the biggest challenges yet to the clerical leadership since it took power in 1979.

The White House announced on Thursday that Iran has halted 800 scheduled executions following pressure from US President Donald Trump regarding the government’s response to a recent wave of protests.

“The president understands today that 800 executions that were scheduled and supposed to take place yesterday were halted,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

Leavitt reiterated that all options remain under consideration by the US administration. “All options remain on the table for the president,” she said, adding that Trump had warned Tehran of “grave consequences” if the killing of demonstrators continued.

The claim has been made by the White House, with no immediate comment or confirmation from Iranian officials.
