Trump Says the Strait of Hormuz Is Under U.S. Control and Suggests Renaming It the “Strait of Trump”

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz is now under American control, adding that it should be renamed the “Strait of Trump.” His remarks came amid an ongoing escalation in U.S. rhetoric toward Iran, with Trump saying Washington is controlling navigation through the key maritime route and that the renewed campaign against Iran will not last long.

In comments cited by the Iraqi News Agency, Trump said he did not care whether Iran signs what he described as a worthless agreement, adding that the Iranian economy is collapsing and that the United States has full control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump Links the Strait to U.S. Control

Proposal to Rename It the “Strait of Trump”

Trump said the Strait of Hormuz is under U.S. control and openly suggested changing its name to the “Strait of Trump.” The comment reflects the highly confrontational tone of his remarks at a time when the waterway remains one of the most sensitive flashpoints in the Gulf and the wider region.

He also said he was not trying to force Iran to the negotiating table, but emphasized that Washington has full control over the strait, implying that the U.S. can shape maritime traffic through the strategic route.

Oil and Shipping at the Center of the Message

Trump said U.S. forces secure the daily passage of ships carrying millions of barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that these operations are taking place “without any problems in most cases.” The remarks highlight the strait’s importance as a major artery for global oil trade and a critical point of leverage in any U.S.-Iran confrontation.

The Renewed Campaign Against Iran “Will Not Last Long”

Military Strikes and Readiness for More

Trump said the “renewed campaign” against Iran will not last long, adding that Tehran had been trying to rebuild its radar and missile systems, as well as develop a missile designed to shoot down naval mines, but that U.S. forces destroyed it.

He added that the attack carried out overnight was “very violent,” stressing that U.S. forces are fully ready to carry out another strike at any time they choose.

A Message of Military and Political Pressure

The remarks suggest a strategy of dual pressure, combining claims of control over the Strait of Hormuz with threats of continued strikes on Iran. Trump’s comments about the Iranian economy collapsing and Tehran’s military systems being hit appear intended to project U.S. dominance both politically and militarily.

The Strait of Hormuz Remains at the Center of Tensions

A Strategic Global Waterway

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with large volumes of crude oil and energy cargo passing through it. That makes it a highly sensitive point in any regional escalation.

Any claim about controlling the strait or changing its status carries implications far beyond the direct U.S.-Iran exchange, affecting global energy markets and maritime security.

Possible Regional Fallout

If the escalation continues, its impact could extend to global oil markets, Gulf shipping security, and U.S. relations with regional states. Trump’s hardline language could also trigger political or military responses from Iran, raising the risk of another round of tensions.

Conclusion:

The United States and Iran continue exchanging escalatory messages, with Trump saying the Strait of Hormuz is under American control and proposing that it be renamed the “Strait of Trump.” While he insists the renewed campaign against Iran will not last long, the strait remains at the center of a mounting political and military confrontation with possible repercussions for shipping and energy markets across the region.
