Syria army says Aleppo Kurdish areas 'closed military zones'

Children carrying belongings walk past security forces as residents flee Aleppo's Ashrafieh Kurdish neighbourhood on January 7, 2026. Civilians were fleeing Kurdish neighbourhoods of Aleppo on January 7 after the Syrian army declared them "closed military zones", amid ongoing fighting with Kurdish-led forces in the northern city. The deadly clashes, which started on January 6, are the worst between the two sides, who have so far failed to implement a March deal to merge the Kurds' semi-autonomous administration and military into Syria's new Islamist government.

The Syrian army said that Aleppo’s Kurdish neighbourhoods will be considered “closed military zones” as of 3.00pm (1200 GMT) on Wednesday, creating “humanitarian corridors” for civilians to leave through beforehand.

In a statement, the army said that “the Sheikh Maqsud and Ashrafieh neighbourhoods will be considered closed military zones after 3.00pm today”, adding that “two safe humanitarian crossings” would be put in place for civilians to leave.

On Wednesday, sporadic clashes between government troops and Kurdish forces continued following two days of major violence opposing the two sides, killing at least nine people.
