Japan, the United Kingdom, and France have called for de-escalation and the restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz after weekend talks between the United States and Iran failed to produce a deal. The critical waterway remains a major concern for global energy security, while Tokyo is weighing whether to send Self-Defense Forces for minesweeping operations.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said Monday that the top priority is “de-escalation, including securing the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.” He added that Tokyo is closely monitoring developments and will continue working with the international community.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron also stressed the need to protect freedom of navigation in the strait, according to Downing Street, and said any ceasefire in the region should include Lebanon.

Japan Watches Strait of Hormuz Closely

Japan is especially vulnerable to any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. More than 90% of its crude oil imports come from the Middle East, and most of that oil passes through the strait.

Kihara said no decision has been made yet on whether Japan will deploy its Self-Defense Forces for minesweeping in the area. The statement shows how seriously Tokyo views the risk to its energy lifeline and maritime trade routes.

A Strategic Chokepoint for Global Energy

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Around 20% of global oil shipments pass through it every day, making any disruption a direct threat to energy markets.

For Japan, Europe, and other import-dependent economies, prolonged restrictions on the strait could push up energy prices and worsen supply concerns. That is why the issue has quickly drawn attention from several major powers.

UK and France Seek Broader De-escalation

Starmer and Macron said they agreed on the strategic importance of the strait for global trade and energy supplies. They also called for working with a broad coalition of partners to defend freedom of navigation.

Their discussion came as Western governments continue to look for ways to reduce tensions in the Middle East. The two leaders also emphasized the need to maintain a truce, with both sides agreeing that Lebanon must be included in any ceasefire framework.

Failed US-Iran Talks Deepen Uncertainty

The push from Japan, the UK, and France followed the collapse of weekend peace talks between Washington and Tehran. Those talks failed to produce a final agreement, leaving the future of the regional standoff unclear.

With diplomacy stalled, countries dependent on the strait are now focused on preventing further escalation and keeping shipping lanes open. Japan’s possible involvement in minesweeping would be one of the more direct responses if the situation worsens.

Conclusion:

The latest statements from Tokyo, London, and Paris show growing international pressure to prevent a wider crisis around the Strait of Hormuz. With talks between the US and Iran stalled and energy markets watching closely, the call for de-escalation and protected navigation is becoming more urgent.
