Pope Leo XIV said Tuesday that he shared the “thirst for truth” of those affected by the 2020 Beirut port explosion, hours after visiting the site and meeting bereaved families who are still seeking justice.

“I was deeply moved by my brief visit to the Port of Beirut… I carry with me the pain, and the thirst for truth and justice, of so many families, of an entire country,” Pope Leo said as he prepared to depart Lebanon after a three-day visit.

Nobody has been held to account for the disaster, which killed more than 220 people, injured some 6,500 and devastated swathes of the capital.
