A powerful Philippines earthquake measuring 7.8 struck off the southern coast near Mindanao, killing at least one person and causing structural damage, authorities confirmed. The quake triggered widespread tsunami warnings across parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers off the coast of Mindanao, making it one of the strongest tremors to hit the region in recent years.

Casualties and Structural Damage Reported

Police confirmed at least one fatality, while several buildings collapsed in affected areas. Videos circulating on social media showed a shopping center in General Santos City crumbling into rubble. A school building also reportedly collapsed following the tremor.

Witnesses described scenes of panic, with residents fleeing into open spaces as aftershocks continued.

Approximately two hours after the main quake, a 6.1-magnitude aftershock struck the region, further increasing concern among local authorities and residents.

Tsunami Warnings Across the Region

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts indicating that tsunami waves could occur within three hours of the earthquake.

Forecasts suggested:

– Waves between 1 and 3 meters above tide level along Philippine coasts.

– Waves between 0.3 and 1 meter along parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.

– Up to 1 meter along certain Japanese Pacific coastlines.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory from northern Okinawa to eastern Tokyo, warning residents to evacuate coastal areas immediately.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

Indonesian authorities ordered evacuations in northern coastal areas as a precaution. Taiwan and Papua New Guinea also monitored potential wave activity.

In the Philippines, tsunami waves reportedly reached some coastal areas, with authorities confirming at least one injury linked to the surge.

President Ferdinand Marcos urged residents to move to higher ground and strictly follow evacuation orders, emphasizing that public safety remains the top priority.

Emergency services remain on high alert, continuing rescue and evacuation operations in low-lying coastal communities.

Philippines in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”

The Philippines lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Major earthquakes in offshore areas can generate destructive tsunami waves, making rapid warning systems critical for coastal populations.

Key developments include:

A 7.8-magnitude quake off Mindanao.
A 6.1-magnitude aftershock.
Regional tsunami warnings in multiple countries.
Ongoing evacuations and emergency operations.

Authorities continue to assess damage as aftershocks remain possible.

Conclusion:

The Philippines earthquake has caused casualties, structural damage, and regional tsunami alerts, prompting large-scale evacuations. While emergency teams work to secure affected areas, officials warn that the coming hours remain critical for monitoring wave activity and ensuring public safety.
