OpenAI has launched a version of ChatGPT for teens, designed for users aged 13 to 17 and equipped with parental controls, enhanced safety features and educational tools.

The company said the new version will activate automatically when estimates suggest a user is under 18, or when the user identifies as being between 13 and 17, in a move aimed at encouraging critical thinking and seeking real-world support when needed.

Parental controls and safety features

OpenAI said the teen version includes strengthened parental controls that allow parents to link accounts, set “quiet hours,” manage some settings and receive alerts in high-risk situations.

Among the new alerts are notifications related to eating disorders, part of the company’s effort to reduce risks for younger users.

Educational tools for younger users

The teen-focused version of ChatGPT for teens includes several learning tools, such as a study mode for guided learning, homework reminders designed to discourage cheating, short quizzes and visual learning aids for different review styles.

It also allows users to set specific study times, making the product more useful as an after-school learning companion.

OpenAI highlights education role

OpenAI said it believes artificial intelligence should expand educational opportunities, which is why the teen version was designed to support users when help is not always available and keep them engaged in active, collaborative learning.

The move reflects the company’s effort to position AI as both a learning and safety tool, rather than only a general chat platform.

New feature for Mac users

In a separate announcement, OpenAI unveiled a new feature in ChatGPT for macOS computers called Computer History.

The feature allows the AI to learn from user activity on the device, including clicks, keystrokes and other interactions, so it can understand workflows, continue tasks and suggest useful automations.

Privacy and controls

OpenAI said the feature is optional and does not work automatically. Users can block specific apps from tracking, review saved data and delete it.

The company also said it does not rely on continuous screenshots, but instead records events and interactions that happen on the device.

Conclusion:

OpenAI’s two new features show the company’s push to expand AI into education, safety and personal productivity, whether through ChatGPT for teens or the new Computer History tool on Mac. The updates suggest a broader attempt to balance innovation with parental oversight and user privacy.
