Syria on Monday condemned the airstrikes that targeted Abu al-Duhur military airport in Idlib province, describing them as an unprovoked attack and a flagrant violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the continued Israeli attacks on Syria since December 8, 2024, despite what Damascus says are efforts to consolidate stability and avoid escalation, show attempts to undermine those efforts and drag the region into further tension.
Damascus blames Israel for escalation
The ministry blamed Israel for the escalation, urging the international community and the UN Security Council to condemn the strikes and take a firm stance against repeated violations.
It added that Syria would continue to defend its rights and national interests by legitimate means, in the face of what it described as repeated attacks on Syrian territory.
Runways targeted in the raid
Israeli aircraft had launched strikes on Abu al-Duhur military airport, while media outlets said the airport’s runways were hit by four missiles.
Syrian media reported material damage at the site, but no casualties were reported so far.
Unclear who carried out the attack
The group responsible for the strikes has not yet been confirmed, though local pages suggested Israel was behind the bombardment.
According to media reports, four unidentified airstrikes hit the airport runway early on Tuesday, causing material damage.
First known strike on the airport since the former regime fell
The attack is the first of its kind on the airport since the fall of the former Syrian regime, adding another layer of tension to the security situation in northwest Syria.
It comes at a time when the country remains highly sensitive to aerial attacks and military activity in several regions.
Conclusion:
The strike on Abu al-Duhur military airport reflects the continued escalation in Syria, while Damascus calls on the international community and the UN Security Council to take a firmer stance. The Syrian government says the attacks are a direct violation of sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.
