Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Tuesday that efforts are ongoing to secure a ceasefire in southern Lebanon, followed by Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas, deployment of the Lebanese army, and the return of displaced residents.

The remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue, including US-mediated talks aimed at stabilizing the situation in the region.

Plan to Restore Stability

Aoun outlined a phased approach to restoring stability in southern Lebanon, which includes:

– Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories

– Deployment of the Lebanese army

– Return of civilians to their homes

– Release of detainees

– Launch of reconstruction efforts

He emphasized that these steps are essential to re-establish long-term security in the south.

Ongoing Talks in Washington

The Lebanese president confirmed that negotiations involving Lebanon, the United States, and Israel are continuing in Washington.

According to the Lebanese presidency, the talks cover several issues, including security arrangements needed to restore stability and extend state authority to Lebanon’s internationally recognized southern borders.

Coordination with the United States

During a phone call with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Aoun discussed developments following recent meetings in Switzerland.

US officials reaffirmed their commitment to implementing agreements reached during those meetings, including:

– Establishing a ceasefire monitoring cell

– Overseeing implementation of security measures

– Studying operational arrangements for the mechanism

Aoun welcomed US engagement, noting its importance in efforts to end the conflict.

Continued International Support

Aoun expressed hope for continued British support for Lebanon, particularly in strengthening the Lebanese army through:

– Military assistance

– Construction of monitoring towers

– Training programs

He also stressed the importance of maintaining an international presence in southern Lebanon after the planned withdrawal of UNIFIL forces in early 2027, noting interest from several European countries in continuing deployment under a new legal framework.

Lebanon-Syria Relations

Regarding Lebanon’s relations with Syria, Aoun said coordination between the two countries is ongoing.

He noted that recent statements by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa had a positive impact and helped address speculation about potential Syrian military involvement in Lebanon.

Call for Israeli Withdrawal

Aoun reiterated that Lebanon welcomes all efforts aimed at achieving Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas, facilitating the return of displaced residents, and supporting reconstruction.

He added that the Washington negotiations seek to establish a clear framework that fulfills Lebanon’s demands and paves the way for a “real and lasting peace,” rather than temporary arrangements.

Key Points

– Lebanon working to secure ceasefire in the south

– Talks in Washington address security and withdrawal

– US supports creation of ceasefire monitoring mechanism

– Lebanon seeks continued international presence after UNIFIL

– Coordination ongoing with Syria

– Emphasis on full Israeli withdrawal and reconstruction

Conclusion

President Aoun’s statements reflect a coordinated diplomatic and security effort to stabilize southern Lebanon. While negotiations continue and international support grows, key challenges remain, particularly regarding implementation on the ground and achieving a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
