Kurdish Official: Agreement with Damascus 'Has No Validity' Amid Ongoing Attacks

Protesters take part in a demonstration called by the Kurdish community in central Athens on January 20, 2026, against a Syrian military offensive targeting Kurds in Syria. Negotiations have collapsed between the Syrian president and the chief of the country's Kurdish-led forces, a Kurdish official told AFP, as the army deployed reinforcements to flashpoint areas in the north.

Senior Syrian Kurdish official Elham Ahmad announced on Tuesday that a recent agreement with the Syrian government “has no validity at the moment,” citing escalating tensions and ongoing government attacks.

During an online press event, Ahmad stated that Damascus’s continued aggression and refusal to engage in dialogue have rendered the agreement void.

“Since there is no ceasefire for the time being, since Damascus continues to attack our regions, and since they refuse to engage in dialogue, the agreement has no validity at the moment,” Ahmad told reporters.
