Iran warned Wednesday it would pursue a prolonged conflict with the United States and Israel that could devastate the global economy, directly contradicting US President Donald Trump’s assertion that the Islamic Republic faced imminent military defeat. The divergent positions on conflict trajectory highlight the fundamental disagreement between the belligerents over the war’s duration and ultimate outcome.

Trump declared Iran was “pretty much at the end of the line,” claiming the country’s navy and air force had been destroyed and remaining missile inventories were depleted. However, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards countered that they would target “economic centres and banks” linked to US and Israeli interests, promising a “long-term war of attrition” capable of destroying the American and global economies.

Trump Claims Iran Military Capacity Destroyed

President Trump told reporters Wednesday that Iran’s military capabilities had been fundamentally degraded through US and Israeli strikes. He claimed the United States could destroy Iran’s electrical infrastructure “within one hour,” leaving the country facing reconstruction that could require a generation to complete.

Trump stated that Iran’s navy and air force had been “destroyed” and that Iranian missile inventories were nearly exhausted. He also claimed US forces had struck 28 Iranian mine-laying vessels in Gulf waters. These assertions characterize the Iranian military as effectively neutralized, unable to sustain prolonged operations against US and Israeli forces.

However, Trump indicated willingness to exercise restraint despite military capability, stating that while the US could render Iran “almost impossible to rebuild,” such action would be counterproductive to broader strategic objectives.

Inconsistency in Trump’s Messaging on War Duration

Trump’s public statements have shifted between claiming rapid victory potential and describing extended operational requirements. In one address, he stated the US must “finish the job” in Iran, while earlier suggesting the war could end soon due to target depletion. This inconsistency in messaging reflects uncertainty about actual operational status and military requirements.

The president also authorized release of 172 million barrels from US strategic reserves beginning the following week, a measure suggesting ongoing energy market instability expectations rather than imminent conflict termination.

Iran Declares Intent for Prolonged Economic Warfare

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards directly challenged Trump’s assessment, declaring through official statements that Tehran would pursue extended conflict aimed at inflicting maximum economic damage on the United States, Israel, and global markets.

Ali Fadavi, an adviser to the Revolutionary Guards’ commander-in-chief, stated: “The United States and Israel must consider the possibility that they will be engaged in a long-term war of attrition that will destroy the entire American economy and the world economy.”

The Guards announced they would strike “economic centres and banks” linked to US and Israeli interests, signaling a shift toward economic targeting rather than purely military infrastructure. This declaration prompted international firms to evacuate personnel from Dubai, indicating market recognition of Iranian capacity to disrupt commercial operations.

Iran’s Strategy of Economic Disruption

The Iranian focus on economic centers and banking infrastructure represents a strategic shift toward targeting systems that support Western economies. By threatening the financial architecture that underpins US and allied economic systems, Iran signals willingness to transform the conflict into an asymmetric economic war rather than direct military confrontation.

The targeting of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, combined with threats against economic infrastructure, creates cumulative pressure on global energy prices, financial stability, and supply chain systems. The strategy reflects recognition that Iran cannot achieve military victory through conventional force comparison but can inflict significant economic costs.

Global Energy Markets Respond to Conflict Disruption

The conflict has created severe disruptions to global energy supplies, prompting emergency governmental responses. The International Energy Agency agreed to release a record 400 million barrels of strategic reserves, while the United States authorized release of 172 million barrels beginning the following week.

These emergency releases signal international recognition that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries approximately 20 percent of global crude oil and one-third of fertilizer used in food production, faces sustained disruption from Iranian military operations.

Shipping Disruptions Drive Reserve Releases

Iran reported targeting two commercial vessels in the Gulf, claiming they “ignored warnings” from Iranian naval forces. The continued targeting of commercial shipping, combined with Iran’s deliberate closure of the Strait of Hormuz through military operations, has effectively halted the normal flow of energy and agricultural inputs that the global economy depends upon.

Analysts warn that prolonged strait disruption would deliver severe economic shocks, particularly to Asia and Europe, which depend heavily on Middle Eastern energy supplies and food production inputs transiting the waterway.

UN Security Council and International Diplomatic Responses

The UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding Iran halt attacks on Gulf states, prompting Iran’s UN ambassador to accuse the council of “blatant misuse” of its mandate. The resolution represented limited international consensus, with some nations viewing the demand as one-sided given US and Israeli military operations.

The diplomatic exchange highlights the inability of international institutions to constrain military operations through formal resolutions when belligerents are committed to continued conflict.

Effectiveness of Diplomatic Pressure

Iran’s dismissal of UN Security Council demands demonstrates that diplomatic and legal mechanisms have proven insufficient to halt military operations. The belligerents appear committed to military objectives regardless of international institutional responses, suggesting that only military exhaustion or geopolitical shifts will alter conflict trajectory.

Expanding Geographic Scope of Conflict

The conflict has spread beyond Israel-Iran direct engagement to encompass multiple regional actors and geographic areas. Drones fell near Dubai airport, injuring four people, while others struck fuel tanks at Oman’s Salalah port. Israeli drones struck targets in Tehran itself, marking the first confirmed Israeli drone strike on the Iranian capital.

Lebanon reported over 630 deaths from ten days of Israel-Hezbollah fighting, with more than 800,000 registered as displaced. One crew member was killed when drones attacked oil tankers near Iraqi waters.

Regional Expansion Creates New Humanitarian Crises

The expansion of conflict to Lebanon and attacks on civilian infrastructure in Gulf states have created cascading humanitarian crises. The displacement of over 800,000 Lebahnese persons represents one of the largest forced movements of population in recent regional history.

Cost Assessments and Material Consumption

Pentagon officials briefed US lawmakers that military operations exceeded $11.3 billion in the first six days, according to reporting citing classified briefing information. This cost figure reflects the material and resource intensity of sustained air campaigns involving multiple aircraft types, missile systems, and logistical operations.

The rapid expenditure of military resources and financial costs suggests both sides are committed to extended operations rather than quick resolution, contradicting Trump’s earlier suggestions of imminent victory.

Iran’s New Leadership and Internal Dynamics

Iran’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared publicly since assuming the position following his predecessor’s death in US-Israeli strikes. Officials stated he was wounded but “safe,” though his absence from public view creates uncertainty about continuity of command authority.

Iranian health ministry figures claimed more than 1,200 people had been killed in US and Israeli strikes, though these figures could not be independently verified. Thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran to commemorate commanders killed in the attacks, representing the largest public gathering since the conflict began.

Defiant Rhetoric and Internal Messaging

Senior Iranian adviser Yahya Rahim Safavi called Trump the “most corrupt and stupid American president” and “Satan himself,” demonstrating internal commitment to defiant messaging. Such rhetoric indicates Iranian leadership intends to maintain public support through anti-American framing regardless of military circumstances.
