A widespread heatwave sweeping across Europe is expected to push temperatures above 35°C on Friday, impacting at least 150 million people, according to analysis by AFP.
The extreme weather conditions are affecting large parts of the continent, raising concerns about public health and safety.
Widespread Impact Across Europe
The analysis indicates that more than 50 million people in Germany and around 30 million in France are among those directly affected by the intense heat.
In total, temperatures above 30°C are expected to affect over 420 million people across Europe, excluding Turkey, meaning nearly seven out of ten residents will experience unusually high temperatures.
The data is based on forecasts from the German Meteorological Service and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, combined with figures from Austria-based Climate Dashboard.
France Reports Rising Heat-Related Incidents
In France, authorities have reported 55 drowning deaths since the start of the heatwave, highlighting the indirect risks associated with extreme temperatures.
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari warned that the situation could worsen, stating: “We fear the situation may develop negatively.”
Drowning Cases Linked to Heat
Officials said approximately 65 percent of drowning incidents occurred in unmonitored or unauthorized swimming areas.
The surge in temperatures has driven many people, especially young individuals, to seek relief in unsafe locations, increasing the risk of accidents.
Heatwave Reaches Peak in France
France experienced peak temperatures on Thursday, affecting more than 51 million people.
Authorities placed 61 regions under red alert due to extreme heat conditions. The heatwave is expected to gradually subside after reaching its peak.
According to French public health data, 409 drowning deaths were recorded in summer 2025, marking a 16 percent increase compared to 2024. Among the victims were 57 children and teenagers.
Health and Climate Concerns
Extreme heat events across Europe are becoming more frequent, raising concerns about climate change and preparedness.
Authorities continue to warn the public to:
– Avoid exposure during peak heat hours
– Stay hydrated
– Use safe, supervised swimming areas
– Follow official safety guidelines
