Iraqi parliamentarian Ali Inhir al-Sarai said on Thursday that the visit to Syria by Supreme Judicial Council chief Faiq Zidan is an important step toward strengthening coordination between Baghdad and Damascus in judicial, legal and security fields.

In a statement, al-Sarai said the visit by Zidan and his accompanying delegation to the Syrian Arab Republic carries special importance because it supports shared interests, stability and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Parliamentary support for the visit

Al-Sarai said the parliamentary Security and Defence Committee backs and welcomes the visit, adding that it reflects a desire to strengthen ties between the two brotherly countries, especially in the judicial, legal and security sectors.

He said such visits help unify efforts to face common challenges and exchange expertise and experience, which would positively affect the security and stability of both Iraq and Syria.

Broader prospects for bilateral ties

He added that the visit opens wider prospects for a strong relationship based on good neighbourliness and shared interests, saying it serves the interests of both the Iraqi and Syrian peoples.

Al-Sarai concluded by expressing full support and best wishes for the visit, saying it was in the interest of both nations.

Faiq Zidan arrives in Damascus

Zidan arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday on an official visit, as part of ongoing contact between the two sides on legal and judicial matters of mutual concern.

Meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa

The Syrian presidency said President Ahmed al-Sharaa received Zidan and his delegation at the People’s Palace in Damascus, in the presence of Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais.

The statement said the meeting discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in judicial and legal fields, along with a number of other issues of mutual concern.

Shared legal and judicial files

According to the Syrian statement, the talks focused on developing institutional cooperation in judicial and legal files at a time when Baghdad and Damascus are seeking to broaden communication in several areas.

The visit comes amid growing official interaction between the two countries in recent months, especially on security, justice and legal coordination.

Conclusion:

The visit to Syria by the chief justice reflects a clear move to deepen judicial and security cooperation between Iraq and Syria, with political and parliamentary figures in Baghdad stressing the importance of the step for stability and shared interests.
