The Iraqi Ministry of Construction, Housing and Municipalities has officially opened the Al-Zankura water project in Ramadi, Anbar province, under the Iraq–UK agreement focused on drainage water treatment and desalination.

The Al-Zankura water project aims to enhance water security in areas facing water scarcity, with officials describing it as a strategic step toward diversifying Iraq’s water resources.

Strategic Step to Strengthen Water Security in Anbar

According to the Iraqi News Agency, the project was inaugurated by the General Directorate of Water in the presence of Anbar Governor Omar Mishaan Al-Dabbous, Director General Ammar Al-Maliki, and UK Ambassador to Iraq Irfan Siddiq.

Governor Al-Dabbous stated that the project represents an important step in addressing water shortages in vulnerable areas. He said it is part of efforts to invest in and diversify water resources in Anbar.

He noted that the project has a production capacity of approximately 100 cubic meters, contributing to meeting local needs, and expressed hope that the second phase will be completed soon to achieve its full objectives.

The governor also highlighted ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources and other sectoral entities to implement similar projects that support both service delivery and agriculture.

Iraq–UK Cooperation in Development Projects

UK Ambassador Irfan Siddiq described the project as a tangible example of cooperation between Iraq and the United Kingdom.

He said the initiative falls within a broader package of agreed development projects discussed during previous official visits between the two governments.

Siddiq expressed confidence that the success of the first phase would pave the way for additional projects in Anbar and other provinces.

Iraq Faces a Relatively Comfortable Water Season

Separately, Iraq’s Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna Al-Tamimi, stated during a visit to Nineveh province that Iraq is heading into a relatively comfortable water season.

Speaking at a press conference attended by INA, Al-Tamimi said Mosul Dam remains one of Iraq’s most important strategic water facilities, and that maintenance and monitoring operations continue with reassuring safety indicators.

He added that the ministry, in coordination with the federal government and under the direct support of the Prime Minister, has placed Mosul Dam among its top priorities.

Improved Storage Levels and Future Plans

The minister confirmed that water storage levels in Iraqi dams have improved, though he stressed the importance of rational water use and efficient management.

Key measures include:

– Strict management of water releases to ensure supply to areas in need.

– Preventing waste of strategic water reserves.

– Continuing technical studies for Mosul Dam and the long-stalled Badoush Dam project.

Al-Tamimi also indicated that an international consultancy contract is close to being finalized to evaluate long-term solutions for Mosul Dam and supporting structures.

He noted that Nineveh province is expected to benefit significantly from upcoming irrigation and water development projects, particularly the Al-Jazira irrigation project.

Conclusion:

The inauguration of the Al-Zankura water project marks a new step in strengthening water security in Anbar, while broader government efforts focus on sustaining dam safety and improving water management nationwide. With improved storage levels and international cooperation, Iraq seeks to reinforce long-term water sustainability and development.
