Zelensky Russia North Korea tensions came into focus after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow had requested an additional 30,000 North Korean troops to support its war effort against Ukraine. The claim signals a further deepening of military ties between Russia and Pyongyang.

At the same time, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had struck Ukrainian military cargo ships, while also carrying out fresh attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine.

Zelensky says Russia is preparing to receive North Korean troops

In a post on X, Zelensky said Russia wants 30,000 more troops from North Korea and that preparations to receive them have been underway since June in the Russian Voronezh region, near the border with Ukraine.

He added that North Korea is also preparing to send additional ballistic missile launch platforms to Russia, warning that the consequences extend beyond Ukraine.

A broader regional threat

Zelensky said the issue is not only a threat to Ukraine.

He warned that Russia is helping North Korea learn how to wage war, improve its weapons, and gain real combat experience, which he said creates a threat for countries across Asia within range of North Korean missiles.

Growing Russia-North Korea military ties

Zelensky’s comments came days after North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui visited Moscow.

After her meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, North Korean state media said the two countries had reaffirmed their political will to strengthen bilateral relations over the long term and across multiple fields.

Pyongyang backs Moscow’s stance

The Korean Central News Agency said North Korea expressed firm support for Russia’s domestic and foreign policies, including Moscow’s stated goal of addressing what it calls the “root cause” of the war in Ukraine.

Russia says it targeted Ukrainian military cargo ships

Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it struck four Ukrainian ships carrying military cargo to the ports of Chornomorsk and Odesa overnight.

The ministry said it hit:

– one bulk carrier

– three dry cargo ships

– one Ukrainian naval landing craft

It also said Russian forces carried out a major strike on military-industrial sites in Kyiv involved in the production, assembly, and storage of drones and drone components.

Ukraine reports injuries and fires after attacks

Ukrainian authorities said Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, injuring three people and causing debris to fall and a fire to break out in a residential building.

Ukraine’s Ukrinform agency reported that Russian forces also carried out 20 attacks on the Dnipropetrovsk region, leaving one person injured.

Casualties in Kharkiv

Officials said one person was killed and seven others, including a child, were injured in Russian attacks on Kharkiv.

Ukraine says it intercepted missiles and drones

Ukraine’s air defense forces said they shot down:

– 6 Russian missiles

– 104 Russian drones

The interceptions took place overnight as both sides continued their intense exchange of strikes.

War expands across air, sea, and industry

The latest developments point to a broader and more complex phase of the Russia-Ukraine war, with attacks expanding to maritime targets, industrial facilities, and urban centers.

Both sides are increasingly relying on drones and long-range missiles, deepening the conflict and complicating efforts to de-escalate.

Key points

– Zelensky says Russia requested 30,000 North Korean troops

– Preparations reportedly underway in Russia’s Voronezh region

– North Korea may send additional missile launch platforms

– Moscow says it hit 4 Ukrainian cargo ships

– Kyiv reports injuries and fires from Russian strikes

Conclusion

Zelensky’s remarks and Russia’s latest military statements reflect the widening international dimensions of the war in Ukraine, including the growing role of North Korea and continued strikes across land, sea, and air.
