Syrian Kurdish Forces to Withdraw East of Euphrates on Saturday

A man holding up the Kurdish flag takes part in a demonstration in Sulaymaniyah, in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, on January 10, 2026, against the clashes between Kurdish forces and the Syrian government security forces in Sheikh Maqsud neighbourhood of Aleppo. Kurdish forces on January 10 denied the government's claim that it was halting military operations in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsud neighbourhood, where the two sides have clashed for days.

Syrian Kurdish leader Mazlum Abdi has announced that his forces will withdraw to areas east of the Euphrates River on Saturday morning. The decision follows violent clashes with Syrian government forces near Aleppo.

In a statement released on Friday via the social media platform X, Abdi confirmed the withdrawal is scheduled for 7:00 AM (0400 GMT). He stated the move was made in response to “calls from friendly countries and mediators” and involves a redeployment of forces from their current positions.
