Romania shoots down second drone  after its Ministry of Defense said a drone entered its airspace and was intercepted by an F-16 fighter jet in an uninhabited area near the border with Ukraine. The incident is the second of its kind in just two days.

The ministry said the aircraft was successfully brought down without any reported injuries or damage.

Drone intercepted in uninhabited area

In an official statement, Romania’s Ministry of Defense said the drone was shot down in a sparsely populated area near the Ukrainian border.

The incident follows Friday’s announcement that Romania had downed another drone inside its airspace, the first such case since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022.

A rare but growing security concern

The repeated incidents over two days highlight rising security risks along the Romania-Ukraine border, where Russian drone attacks on Ukraine continue to take place close to Romanian territory.

Romania is a NATO member with a long border with Ukraine

Romania, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), shares a land border with Ukraine stretching nearly  600 kilometers .

That border has become increasingly sensitive as Russian drone strikes on Ukraine continue near Romanian airspace, raising fears of accidental or spillover violations.

First such incident since the war began

Romania had announced on Friday that it shot down another drone in its airspace, the first confirmed incident of its kind since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.

The latest development adds to concerns among NATO states bordering Ukraine about possible airspace violations linked to the ongoing conflict.

Key points

– Romania shoots down second drone in two days

– F-16 fighter jet used in the interception

– Drone brought down near Ukraine border

– First incident had been reported on Friday

– Romania is a NATO member with a 600 km border with Ukraine

Conclusion

The incident shows the continuing security challenges facing countries bordering Ukraine as the war’s aerial dimension expands. While Romania says its forces are prepared to respond to any airspace violation, the repeated drone incidents underline the risk of the conflict spilling beyond Ukraine’s borders.
