Britain's then-Prince Charles, Prince of Wales (R) and Britain's Prince William (L) meet with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (C) for dinner at Clarence House in central London on March 7, 2018. Prince William will begin his first official visit to Saudi Arabia with a meeting on February 9, 2026 with host Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as London seeks to deepen economic cooperation with the Gulf nation.

The Prince William Saudi Arabia visit concluded on Wednesday with a tour of the historic oasis city of AlUla, where the British heir to the throne reviewed environmental and heritage projects.

The three day trip included high level meetings in Riyadh, cultural visits and engagements focused on youth, sports and sustainability. It also came amid renewed scrutiny in the United Kingdom over allegations linked to Prince Andrew and the late US convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince William arrived in Riyadh on Monday and was received by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader.

Meeting with Crown Prince and Economic Agenda

According to the official Saudi Press Agency, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman accompanied Prince William on a private tour of the UNESCO listed At-Turaif district in Diriyah, the first capital of the Saudi state. The two sides later held talks as part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation.

The visit coincides with preparations to mark 100 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. Trade in goods and services between the two countries reached approximately $23.5 billion in the year ending June 30, 2025.

Saudi Arabia is regarded as one of Britain’s key strategic partners in the Gulf, with longstanding ties between the two royal families. The late Queen Elizabeth II hosted Saudi royals during four state visits, placing the Kingdom among Britain’s principal international partners.

The last senior British royal to visit Riyadh before this trip was King Charles III in February 2014, when he was Prince of Wales.

Context of Political and Media Scrutiny

The visit took place as the British monarchy faces renewed pressure over Prince Andrew’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein.

In recently released files by the US Department of Justice, allegations emerged that Andrew may have shared potentially confidential reports with Epstein while serving as a UK trade envoy between 2001 and 2011.

Ahead of William’s arrival, Kensington Palace stated that he and his wife Catherine were “deeply concerned by the continuing revelations,” without directly naming Prince Andrew.

AlUla Conservation and Vision 2030

A key focus of the Prince William Saudi Arabia visit was environmental conservation in AlUla, a region known for its sandstone landscapes and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra, home to ancient Nabataean tombs.

During his visit to AlUla, Prince William:
• Met rangers working to protect wildlife populations
• Reviewed land restoration programmes
• Spoke with local farmers involved in sustainable agriculture initiatives

Saudi authorities have invested heavily in developing AlUla as a global cultural and tourism destination, hosting international art exhibitions and heritage projects. These efforts form part of the broader Vision 2030 reform programme led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which aims to diversify the Saudi economy beyond oil and expand sectors such as tourism, culture and renewable energy.

Engagements in Riyadh

On the second day of his tour, Prince William visited an urban regeneration project in Riyadh and attended activities at a sports complex.

According to Saudi media and footage broadcast by Sky News, he observed football training sessions involving girls’ youth teams and participated in drills, scoring two goals during the visit. He also attended an e sports tournament and met young Saudi gamers.

These engagements highlighted growing cooperation in areas such as youth development, sports and digital innovation.

Conclusion:

The Prince William Saudi Arabia visit combined diplomatic meetings, cultural engagements and environmental initiatives. While overshadowed in British media by developments related to Prince Andrew, the trip underscored ongoing economic and strategic ties between London and Riyadh, as both countries prepare to mark a century of diplomatic relations.
