New York Times slams Trump lawsuit as an attempt to stifle journalism

The New York Times building is seen on June 30, 2020 in New York City. US President Donald Trump said on September 15, 2025 that he is bringing a $15 billion "defamation and libel lawsuit" against the New York Times. "The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!" he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, adding that the lawsuit was being brought in Florida. The New York Times on Tuesday criticized a $15 billion defamation lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump as a brazen attempt to silence independent reporting.

“This lawsuit has no merit,” the paper said. “It lacks any legitimate legal claims and instead is an attempt to stifle and discourage independent reporting. The New York Times will not be deterred by intimidation tactics.”
