Russian scientists from Tver Technical University have developed new catalysts for drug and fuel production, achieving efficiency rates exceeding 90 percent without the need for harsh operating conditions.

The innovation is expected to reduce production costs and minimize product degradation caused by high temperatures, according to the university’s press office.

Innovative Polymer-Based Technology

According to the university, researchers created a new catalyst model based on porous aromatic polymers capable of stabilizing single metal atoms and nanoscale metal clusters.

This approach enables the design of catalytic systems incorporating metals such as:

– Palladium

– Ruthenium

– Silver

– Nickel

– Cobalt

– Copper

– Zinc

These systems can be used in the production of pharmaceuticals, aromatic compounds, paints, varnishes, and environmentally friendly fuel components.

High Conversion and Selectivity Rates

Researchers reported that the developed polymer supports provide high stability for catalytically active particles and allow structural control at the nanoscale level.

During laboratory tests, scientists achieved conversion rates of up to 100 percent, with selectivity exceeding 90 percent under moderate processing conditions.

This means that industrial processes can be carried out at lower temperatures and pressures, reducing energy consumption and limiting thermal degradation of products and intermediates.

Economic and Environmental Benefits

The primary advantage of the new catalysts lies in enabling manufacturing under milder conditions.

Key benefits include:

– Lower operational costs

– Reduced energy use

– Decreased emissions linked to high-temperature processes

– Improved product quality

The materials also enable the production of gamma valerolactone, a “green” solvent and biofuel component derived from plant biomass.

Applications in Environmental Protection

In addition to industrial production, the new materials can serve as adsorbents for treating industrial wastewater.

They are capable of removing antibiotics, dyes, phenols, and heavy metals, offering potential environmental protection applications.

The catalysts are resistant to harsh environments and high temperatures, combining the properties of next-generation catalytic systems with durable polymer materials.

Conclusion:

The development of new catalysts for drug and fuel production represents a significant step toward more efficient and sustainable industrial processes. By achieving high conversion rates under moderate conditions, the innovation offers economic advantages while supporting environmentally responsible manufacturing.
