Iraq is moving forward with plans to strengthen its oil sector by expanding cooperation with regional and international partners, as the Ministry of Oil continues discussions with Turkey over crude oil transportation and export capacity while signing a development contract for the Hamrin oilfield with US-based HKN Company.

The two moves reflect Iraq’s strategy to increase production, enhance export capabilities, attract foreign investment, and maximize the use of associated natural gas resources.

Iraq and Turkey continue talks on oil transportation and export expansion

Iraq’s Minister of Oil, Bassim Mohammed Khudair Al-Abadi, held talks with Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar on strengthening cooperation in the oil and gas sector.

The discussions focused on the future of the crude oil export agreement between the two countries, particularly the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, in addition to increasing export capacities and developing joint energy projects.

Both sides emphasized the importance of continuing negotiations on issues related to oil transportation and expanding cooperation in strategic energy projects that serve the interests of both countries.

Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline remains a key element in export strategy

The Iraqi-Turkish discussions highlighted the importance of the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline as a major route for transporting Iraqi crude oil to international markets.

The talks also included the possibility of Turkish companies participating in future investment projects within Iraq’s oil sector, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral economic ties.

Iraq signs Hamrin oilfield development contract with US HKN Company

In parallel with its cooperation efforts with Turkey, Iraq’s Northern Oil Company signed a contract with US-based HKN Company to develop the Hamrin oilfield.

The agreement comes within the Ministry of Oil’s strategy to invest in oil fields, increase crude production, and improve gas utilization to support domestic energy needs and exports.

Hamrin field expected to boost oil and gas output

Under the agreement, peak production from the Hamrin field is expected to reach around 140,000 barrels per day, along with approximately 40 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

The Ministry of Oil confirmed that the produced gas will not be burned but will instead be used for energy purposes at the field, with surplus volumes utilized for reservoir pressure maintenance through injection operations.

Foreign investment remains central to Iraq’s energy strategy

The Iraqi government continues efforts to attract major international oil and gas companies, particularly from the United States and Europe, to participate in the development of the country’s energy resources.

The Ministry of Oil said that the Hamrin project will contribute to creating employment opportunities for Iraqi workers and supporting local companies involved in the energy sector.

Energy partnerships aim to strengthen Iraq’s position in regional markets

The agreements with Turkey and HKN reflect Iraq’s broader approach to improving production capacity, expanding export infrastructure, and attracting international expertise.

While cooperation with Turkey focuses on transportation routes and export growth, the Hamrin development project represents an effort to increase domestic production and improve gas management.

Conclusion:

Iraq is advancing multiple initiatives to strengthen its oil industry through regional cooperation and international investment. Continued negotiations with Turkey over oil exports and the development of the Hamrin field with US HKN Company highlight Baghdad’s efforts to increase production, enhance energy security, and expand its role in global oil markets.
