Iranian Media Reports 3,000 Arrested in Recent Protests

Anti-Iranian regime protesters hold a flag of Iran from before the 1979 revolution, with the lion ad sun emblems, during a demonstration in solidarity with Iranian protestors and "against the Islamic Repuplic for killing Iranian people" in Yalova, on January 16, 2026. The protest movement in Iran has subsided after a crackdown that has killed thousands under an internet blackout, monitors said on January 16, 2026, one week after the start of the biggest protests in years challenging the Islamic republic's theocratic system.

Approximately 3,000 individuals were arrested during the recent wave of protests in Iran, according to a report on Friday by the Tasnim news agency, which cited security officials.

The Tasnim agency, known for its proximity to Iranian security forces, stated that the detainees included “armed individuals and rioters” as well as “members of terrorist organisations.”

This figure contrasts sharply with estimates from human rights organizations, which suggest that the number of people arrested could be as high as 20,000.
