The Iran protests have resulted in the killing of at least 3,428 people by security forces, according to a report released Wednesday by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) organization.
The rights group also stated that more than 10,000 individuals have been arrested amid the demonstrations. IHR attributed the significant increase in its verified death toll to new information obtained from sources within Iran’s health and education ministries.
The report highlights a period of intense violence, noting that at least 3,379 of the killings occurred between January 8 and January 12.
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the director of IHR, condemned what he described as a “mass killing of protesters on the streets in recent days.” The organization emphasized that the newly released figure represents an “absolute minimum” for the actual number of casualties.
