Iran Expands Cyber Operations and Military Posturing as Middle East Conflict Intensifies

Iran escalated both cyber operations and military rhetoric on March 10, 2026, conducting a sophisticated cyberattack against Albania’s parliament while the Iranian Revolutionary Guards publicly claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz against US Navy operations. The parallel actions demonstrate Iran’s multifaceted approach to regional conflict, leveraging both digital warfare and military posturing amid the ongoing war in the Middle East. Albania’s parliament confirmed the breach, in which Iran-linked hackers claiming to represent a group called “Homeland Justice” announced they had stolen sensitive lawmakers’ data. Simultaneously, Iranian military officials asserted that no US Navy vessel has approached the strategic waterway, signaling Iranian determination to maintain control over one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.

Iran-Linked Hackers Breach Albania Parliament Systems

A group identifying itself as “Homeland Justice,” previously linked to Iranian cyber operations, claimed responsibility for the sophisticated cyberattack against Albania’s parliament on March 10. The group announced the breach on Telegram, stating that it had obtained sensitive communications and correspondence from lawmakers.

“All conversations and correspondence of corrupt MPs from recent months are in the hands of Homeland Justice,” the group posted on the encrypted messaging platform. “We are much closer to you than you think.”

Albania’s parliament confirmed the attack in an official statement, revealing that its computer systems had been targeted with a sophisticated assault designed to delete data and compromise multiple internal systems. “It was found that information had been deleted from several accounts belonging to administration employees,” parliament officials said, though they noted that core working infrastructure remained intact and that defensive measures had successfully contained the breach.

Geopolitical Context of the Cyber Campaign

The timing of the cyberattack against Albania reflects broader regional tensions. Albania hosts several thousand members of the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI, also known as MEK), an organization that Iran officially designates as terrorist and views as a major political and security threat.

The presence of this opposition group on Albanian territory has made the Balkan nation a target for Iranian cyber operations and diplomatic pressure. In 2022, following a previous Iranian cyberattack on Albanian IT infrastructure, the country severed diplomatic relations with Iran, establishing a clear divide between Tirana and Tehran.

Expanding Iranian Cyber Operations

Security experts warn that Iran has significantly broadened its cyber capabilities and target scope as the Middle East conflict has intensified. The cyberattack on Albania represents part of a larger pattern of Iranian cyber operations extending beyond regional boundaries and into Europe.

In June 2025, Homeland Justice conducted a separate cyberattack targeting the information technology services of Tirana, Albania’s capital, demonstrating persistent Iranian interest in compromising Albanian government infrastructure. The March attack represents a continuation and escalation of this campaign.

“As the war in the Middle East continues, highly capable hackers linked to Iran have broadened their activities,” security experts have cautioned. The diversification of targets suggests Iran is using cyber operations as a tool of broader geopolitical strategy extending well beyond immediate conflict zones.

Albania’s Response and Investigation

Albania’s National Cyber Security Authority launched an immediate investigation into the breach. Director Saimir Kapllani told media outlets that technical assessments were underway and that further details would be released upon completion of the investigation. The authority emphasized that while data had been compromised, critical infrastructure remained secure and operational.

The incident marks the second major cyberattack on Albanian government systems linked to Iran in less than a year, signaling a sustained Iranian focus on the country as a target for cyber operations.

Iranian Military Assertions in the Strait

Simultaneous with the cyberattack announcement, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards made aggressive claims regarding maritime control in the Persian Gulf. Iranian military officials asserted that no US Navy vessel has approached the Strait of Hormuz, using emphatic language suggesting Iranian determination to maintain exclusive control over the strategic waterway.

The statement underscores Iranian military posturing as the broader Middle East conflict continues. The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-third of global maritime petroleum trade passes, has become a focal point of US-Iran tensions throughout the conflict.

Conclusion:

Iran’s coordinated cyber and military actions on March 10, 2026, demonstrate the multidimensional nature of contemporary conflict. While cyberattacks on Albania target opposition groups and challenge regional adversaries, Iranian military declarations attempt to establish deterrence and control over critical maritime infrastructure. These parallel operations reveal Iran’s strategy of leveraging both digital and conventional military tools to project power and pursue strategic objectives across geographic boundaries and conflict domains. The attacks on Albania and assertions over the Strait illustrate how the Middle East conflict is reshaping security dynamics far beyond the region’s immediate geography.
