Iran arrests suspects Israeli collaboration during war

An Iranian flag flutters as as digger arrives to help remove the debris from destroyed buildings following a military strike on the Iranian capital Tehran on March 15, 2026. Iran's Foreign Minister said in an interview published on March 15, that the war pitting his country against the United States and Israel will only end when Tehran can be certain it will not be restarted. On February 28, Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran, killing its supreme leader Ayatollah and triggering a war that spread across the Middle East.

Iranian authorities arrested at least 38 people across the country Sunday on charges related to cooperation with Israel and transmitting information to opposition channel “Iran International,” according to local media reports. The arrests occur as the 16-day Middle East war continues, with Iran simultaneously battling what it describes as an existential security threat while conducting sweeping internal security operations targeting suspected Israeli intelligence networks and information leaks.

In western Azerbaijan Province alone, the FARS News Agency reported that “20 people were detained by court order” after being discovered “sending details of military and security locations to the Zionist enemy.” According to the province’s prosecutor general, Hossein Majidi, the arrests resulted from raids on networks connected to Israel. Local media reported widespread detention campaigns across Iran in recent days, with authorities arresting hundreds suspected of cooperation with Israel and the United States.

Systematic Detention Campaign Targets Alleged Israeli Collaborators

Iran’s intelligence ministry announced the arrest of at least 18 people for transmitting information to “Iran International,” a London-based opposition channel that Tehran classifies as “terrorist.” The ministry stated that detainees sent the channel “photographs of sites hit by Israel and the United States” alongside other locations.

The systematic nature of arrests across multiple provinces suggests coordinated security operations targeting information leaks and suspected intelligence networks. Provincial authorities announced detention figures suggesting organized campaigns rather than isolated arrests.

Charges and Allegations Against Detainees

Detainees face serious charges including:

Espionage for foreign powers
Transmitting military and security information
Cooperation with opposition media organizations
Using intelligence networks to coordinate with Israel

The scope of charges reflects Iranian security assessments that information leaks represent significant national security threats during wartime.

Iran International and Opposition Media as Target

Iran International, a Persian-language opposition news channel based in London, has become a focal point for Iranian government security operations. The channel is accused of receiving military intelligence and photographic documentation of damage from Israeli and American strikes.

In January, Iran banned cooperation with Iran International, accusing it of being “affiliated with the Zionist entity.” The designation as a terrorist organization provided legal justification for pursuing anyone accused of transmitting information to the channel.

Information Warfare and Damage Assessment

The focus on Iran International transmission suggests that opposition media serves as a mechanism for documenting and publicizing damage from military strikes. Photographs showing impact sites and destruction could serve multiple purposes including damage assessment verification and public information strategy.

Digital Isolation and Starlink Workarounds

Iran has implemented complete internet isolation since the war began, cutting off the entire nation from external digital connectivity. This digital blackout was designed to prevent intelligence leaks and coordinate internal information control.

However, some Iranians have circumvented these restrictions using Starlink devices manufactured by American company SpaceX, which connect to internet through satellite technology. The use of Starlink represents a technological challenge to Iran’s information control efforts and may explain some of the information transmission that authorities are pursuing through arrests.

Satellite Internet as Double-Edged Sword

Starlink access creates a security dilemma for Iranian authorities. The technology enables communications with the outside world but also provides channels for intelligence transmission. The arrests targeting Starlink users and information transmissions reflect official recognition that satellite internet circumvents state information controls.

Context of Wartime Security Operations

The extensive arrest campaign occurs as Iran prosecutes military operations against Israel and Gulf states while simultaneously defending against American and Israeli strikes. The dual challenge of external military conflict and internal security threats may explain the scale and intensity of detention operations.

Domestic Security Paranoia During Conflict

Large-scale arrest campaigns during wartime often reflect government paranoia regarding potential internal challenges to state authority and security. The extensive detention campaigns may exceed actual intelligence threats, reflecting broader official anxiety about regime stability.

Historical Precedent for Wartime Espionage Prosecutions

Iran has precedent for prosecuting espionage during periods of external conflict. Previous wars and security crises have prompted similar detention campaigns targeting suspected foreign intelligence networks. The current operations may reflect standard wartime protocols rather than extraordinary circumstances.

International Humanitarian Concerns

Large-scale detention operations during wartime typically raise international humanitarian concerns regarding detention conditions, due process, and potential torture. The scale of Iranian arrests (hundreds according to reports) suggests potential violations of international detention standards.

Separate Incident: Israeli Casualties from Iranian Missile Strikes

In a related development, at least eight people were injured in Israel from Iranian missile strikes launched Sunday, according to official Israeli sources. By midday Sunday, Iran had launched seven waves of missiles toward Israel, with Israeli authorities claiming interception of some missiles.

Some missiles reportedly carried cluster warheads, with Israeli police releasing surveillance footage from Tel Aviv area showing impact moments described as resulting from “cluster munitions” causing “damage in multiple locations.”

Documented Casualties and Injuries

Red Star of David ambulance service reported that shrapnel from explosions caused four people to be injured in various areas of the greater Tel Aviv region. A man in his sixties was hospitalized with moderate injuries, while three others received treatment for blast injuries.

Additional missile waves caused minor injuries from asphalt fragments and shrapnel. An elderly man and woman sustained minor injuries from a missile wave targeting the Tel Aviv area around 3 a.m. Sunday (1 a.m. GMT).

Alleged Targeting of Civilian Areas

Israeli Foreign Minister Gedeon Saar accused Iran Sunday of targeting civilian areas during a visit to the northern town of Zarzir, where approximately 60 residents were injured by shrapnel from an Iranian missile launched earlier in the week.

Saar stated: “While we target military objectives… the Iranian regime targets civilians,” adding that “all injuries we have sustained… are Israeli citizens hit by Iranian missiles. This is, of course, a war crime.”

Israeli police official Shlomi Shezinger stated during an inspection of a Tel Aviv impact site that Iran “always targets crowded places, filled with people, major cities.”

Pattern of Targeting Assessment

Israeli officials characterize the missile targeting pattern as deliberately targeting civilian population centers rather than military installations. This characterization frames the conflict through civilian protection legal frameworks and international humanitarian law.

Expanded Missile Campaign Scope

According to the Haaretz newspaper reporting Israeli security officials’ assessments, Iran has launched 250 missiles toward Israel since the war began on February 28 through March 13. The missile campaign represents sustained Iranian military operations despite substantial American and Israeli air operations.

Twelve people have been killed in Israel from missiles or falling debris since the war began, according to an Agence France-Presse count based on figures from Israeli authorities and rescue teams.

Escalation of Missile Attacks

The continuation and apparent acceleration of Iranian missile operations despite coalition air superiority suggests Iranian commitment to military escalation. The casualty toll, while limited by air defence effectiveness, demonstrates that Iranian missiles are reaching targets and causing human casualties.

Broader Context of Information Control and War

The arrest campaign targeting information transmission to opposition media occurs simultaneously with Iranian military operations against external adversaries. This simultaneous internal and external conflict reflects the comprehensive security challenge facing the Iranian regime during wartime.

The extensive surveillance and detention operations targeting suspected intelligence leaks suggest that Iranian authorities view information control as strategically equivalent to military operations. Preventing documentation and publicization of damage may be as important to official strategy as military responses to Israeli strikes.

Conclusion:

Iran’s arrest of 38 suspects on espionage charges reflects intensifying domestic security operations during military conflict, with authorities targeting information transmission to opposition media as a security priority equivalent to external military response. Simultaneous Iranian missile strikes on Israel have caused casualties among Israeli civilians, with officials characterizing targeting patterns as deliberately civilian-focused. The broader context suggests that information warfare and internal security operations represent components of Iranian strategy alongside kinetic military operations.
