Iraq’s parliament speaker Heibat Al-Halbousi on Thursday met with Australia’s ambassador to Iraq, Glenn Miles, and Russia’s ambassador, Elbrus Kutrashev, to discuss bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation with both countries across all fields. The meetings came as part of Iraq’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with international partners.

According to a statement from the Speaker’s Office cited by the Iraqi News Agency, the talks also covered regional and international developments, along with a number of issues of mutual interest.

Meeting With the Australian Ambassador

Bilateral Relations and Joint Cooperation

The statement said Al-Halbousi received Australian Ambassador Glenn Miles, and the two sides discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation between Iraq and Australia in all fields. They also discussed regional and international developments and a number of topics of shared interest.

The meeting reflects Iraq’s continued effort to deepen its ties with Australia as part of broader political and economic partnerships built on dialogue and mutual interests.

Regional and International Files

The two sides also reviewed regional and international developments, showing that the meeting was not limited to bilateral issues but also touched on broader matters related to Iraq’s regional and global environment.

Meeting With the Russian Ambassador

Relations and Areas of Cooperation

In a separate meeting, Al-Halbousi discussed bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation with Russian Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev. The Speaker’s Office said the meeting took place on the occasion of the end of the ambassador’s mission in Iraq.

The discussion covered political and diplomatic relations, as well as opportunities to broaden ties between Baghdad and Moscow in the next phase, in ways that serve the interests of both countries.

End of the Ambassador’s Mission

The statement noted that Kutrashev’s reception came as his mission in Iraq came to an end, giving the meeting a farewell tone while also underscoring the importance of continuing communication through diplomatic and parliamentary channels.

What the Meetings Suggest

Parliamentary Outreach and International Engagement

The meetings show that Iraq’s parliament continues to play a role in supporting foreign relations and engagement with international partners. They also reflect Baghdad’s desire to keep communication channels open with a range of states in line with its political and economic interests.

Broadening Multidirectional Relations

The meetings come at a time when Iraqi institutions are seeking to deepen ties with several countries across political, economic, and security fields, while also maintaining coordination on regional and international issues that directly affect Iraq.

Conclusion:

Parliament Speaker Heibat Al-Halbousi met with the Australian and Russian ambassadors to discuss ways to expand cooperation between Iraq and both countries, while also reviewing bilateral relations and regional and international developments. The meetings reflect Iraq’s continued diplomatic outreach and its effort to broaden partnerships with global actors.
