Electricity Ministry: East Canal Solar Project to Boost Power Supply

This picture taken on June 3, 2025, shows a worker checking solar panels near the city of Chalcis. Once a centre of agricultural production, the area around Kastron Viotias, some 110 kilometres (68 miles) northwest of Athens, has seen solar parks mushroom over the past 15 years, part of a major renewable energy push in Greece. The country currently has 16 gigawatts of renewable energy installed, with solar power representing nearly 10 gigawatts, including 2.5 gigawatts that came on line last year. Baghdad – Iraqi News Agency (INA)
The Ministry of Electricity announced that the solar power project under construction in Baghdad’s East Canal area will add about 100 megawatts to the national grid—equivalent to three traditional power plants—helping to improve supply hours and grid stability.

Spokesman Ahmed Moussa explained that the project targets densely populated areas such as Sadr City and East Canal, utilizing the central island along the highway to establish a modern solar station.

He added that the project is set to be completed in 2026 as part of a broader government plan to expand renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The ministry is also working on converting government buildings to solar energy and providing soft loans to citizens to encourage the use of clean power.
