The Algerian Civil war began after the military-backed regime cancelled elections in January 1992, to prevent the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) from winning a sweeping majority. This conflict caused the death of some 200,000 people, including civilians, for which The Armed Islamic Group (GIA) claimed responsibility.
