Spain wildfires have caused one of the country’s largest recent fire incidents, burning more than 32,000 hectares in the rural province of Guadalajara in central Spain. The blazes are part of a wider wildfire crisis sweeping across southern Europe, where France and Italy are also battling severe fires that have killed three firefighters and forced thousands to evacuate.

Major fire in Guadalajara destroys vast areas

A large wildfire broke out in a rural area of Guadalajara, one of the biggest fires recorded in Spain’s history.

Officials said the blaze had burned through more than 32,000 hectares, or around 79,000 acres, while firefighting crews continued efforts to contain the flames.

Dozens of villages evacuated

Authorities evacuated around 34 villages in the affected area. More than 200 firefighters were deployed, supported by ground vehicles and aircraft.

No serious injuries or fatalities were reported in the Spanish fire zone so far.

Southern Europe hit by widespread wildfires

The situation extends beyond Spain, with violent wildfires continuing to sweep through parts of France and Italy.

Strong winds and soaring temperatures have accelerated the spread of the fires across the region.

Three firefighters killed

The fires have already claimed the lives of three firefighters:

Two in France
One in Italy

France battles major blazes

Firefighters in France are working to control two major fires in the Gironde and Var regions.

Gironde fire:

More than 12,000 people evacuated
Over 2,000 hectares burned

Var fire:

About 2,500 hectares burned
Around 400 people evacuated

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said more than 12,500 fires have broken out since the start of the year, burning roughly 44,000 hectares.

Italy mobilizes thousands against fires

In Italy, wildfires in Sicily and Calabria forced around 100 people and 22 patients to be evacuated from a clinic.

Authorities deployed about 6,000 personnel and 20 aerial units to fight hundreds of fires, as temperatures climbed above 40 degrees Celsius.

Extreme heat intensifies the crisis

Southern Europe has been experiencing:

Temperatures above 40°C
Severe drought conditions
Dry landscapes that help fires spread rapidly

Scientists link worsening drought to climate change

An international team of scientists said the severe drought affecting Europe has been worsened by human-caused climate change, especially the continued use of fossil fuels.

They said climate change has contributed to:

More severe drought
Record-breaking temperatures
Faster wildfire spread

Key figures and impacts

Spain: 32,000 hectares burned in Guadalajara
Evacuations: thousands across several countries
Deaths: 3 firefighters
France: 12,500 fires this year, 44,000 hectares burned
Italy: 6,000 personnel and 20 aircraft deployed

Conclusion:

Spain wildfires and the wider crisis across southern Europe underscore the growing impact of extreme weather and climate-related risks. With heatwaves and drought conditions continuing, more fires are likely unless containment efforts improve and weather conditions ease.
