US Announces Israel–Lebanon Ceasefire Agreement

The United States announced Thursday that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire under American mediation, marking a significant step toward de-escalation along the southern Lebanese border.

According to a statement from the US Department of State, the Israel Lebanon ceasefire includes the establishment of trial zones in which the Lebanese Army will exercise exclusive control, with armed groups not affiliated with the state excluded from those areas.

Details of the Ceasefire Arrangement

The US statement said both sides agreed to create designated trial areas inside Lebanon where the Lebanese Army will assume sole authority.

The agreement stipulates that non-state armed groups will be excluded from these zones as part of efforts to stabilize the situation and prevent renewed clashes.

No detailed timeline for implementation was immediately disclosed, and further operational mechanisms were not specified in the initial announcement.

Nawaf Salam: Negotiations Were the Best Option

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the negotiation track was the fastest and least costly option for Lebanon at this stage.

In remarks reported by the Iraqi News Agency, Salam stated that negotiations were not the only option available, but they were the best course of action under current circumstances.

He added that choosing dialogue does not eliminate the possibility of pursuing other options in parallel if necessary.

Salam emphasized that the negotiation path was the quickest and least burdensome for Lebanon, its people, and particularly for residents of southern Lebanon.

Resolution 1701 and Army Deployment

Salam noted that the absence of armed groups and weapons south of the Litani River was not externally imposed, but rather a commitment Lebanon undertook when it agreed to UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

He clarified that the initial deployment of the Lebanese Army in trial zones does not undermine Lebanon’s right to full withdrawal from any occupied territory.

The prime minister stressed that all parties must prioritize Lebanon’s national interest, warning that those who refuse would bear responsibility for potential consequences.

He also acknowledged that negotiations were not easy and that the Lebanese delegation faced what he described as Israeli intransigence during the talks. He added that Lebanon’s demands in the negotiations were not new.

Regional Implications

The Israel Lebanon ceasefire agreement comes amid broader regional tensions and recurring cross-border exchanges that have raised concerns about wider escalation.

Key elements of the arrangement include:

US-sponsored mediation.
Creation of trial zones under Lebanese Army control.
Exclusion of non-state armed groups from those areas.
Reaffirmation of commitments linked to Resolution 1701.

The effectiveness of the agreement will depend on implementation on the ground and continued diplomatic engagement to prevent renewed hostilities.

Conclusion:

The announcement of an Israel Lebanon ceasefire under US mediation represents a significant diplomatic development. While Lebanese officials describe negotiations as the most practical option to limit costs and risks, the durability of the agreement will hinge on adherence to its terms and sustained efforts to maintain stability along the border.
