Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim Al-Araji said that regional stability is closely linked to respecting the sovereignty of states and rejecting the use of their territories as arenas for regional or international conflicts.

Al-Araji made the remarks during his participation in the First International Security Forum in Moscow, where he outlined Iraq’s approach to shared security challenges.

His statements come amid ongoing tensions in parts of the Middle East and Iraq’s continued efforts to promote de-escalation and balanced regional engagement.

Iraq’s position at the Moscow security forum

In a post on the platform X, followed by the Iraqi News Agency, Al-Araji said Iraq presented its views on security issues based on dialogue, balance, and building partnerships that support international peace and stability.

He stressed that regional stability requires respect for national sovereignty and a clear rejection of turning countries into battlegrounds for broader conflicts.

Al-Araji added that regional security is a collective responsibility that depends on cooperation, trust-building, and shared interests, away from political alignments.

Enhancing security partnerships

Al-Araji highlighted the importance of strengthening security partnerships through:

Intelligence sharing
Exchange of expertise and modern technologies
Joint coordination to address cross-border threats

He reaffirmed Iraq’s role as an active partner in supporting regional stability and advancing dialogue and openness.

Meeting with Russian Security Council chief

During his visit to Moscow, Al-Araji met with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, according to a statement from his media office reported by the Iraqi News Agency.

At the start of the meeting, Al-Araji conveyed the greetings of Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zeidi to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two sides discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism and the exchange of information and expertise.

Discussion on transferred ISIS members

The talks also addressed the status of ISIS members transferred from Syria to Iraq, including 147 individuals who claim Russian nationality.

The issue was discussed within the framework of ongoing security and judicial coordination between Baghdad and Moscow.

Iraq’s efforts to reduce Middle East tensions

Al-Araji reiterated that Iraq is making efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East and values the positions of countries supporting an end to wars and conflicts, particularly Russia.

For his part, Shoigu expressed Moscow’s readiness to continue and enhance cooperation with Iraq in a manner that serves the interests of both nations.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on holding a new round of the Iraqi-Russian joint committee to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Conclusion:

Al-Araji’s statements in Moscow underscore Iraq’s emphasis on regional stability through respect for sovereignty and expanded security cooperation. The discussions with Russian officials reflect ongoing coordination in counterterrorism and efforts aimed at reducing tensions across the Middle East.
