Iranian airstrikes on Kurdish groups Iraq - الضربات الإيرانية على الأكراد العراق

An Iranian Kurdish Peshmerga member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) inspects the damage sustained at the Azadi Camp of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) following an Iranian cross-border attack in the town of Koye (Koysinjaq), in the east of Erbil district in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq on March 3, 2026. The United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, with the killing of Iran's supreme leader and the Islamic republic retaliated with barrages of missiles at Gulf states and Israel. The Kurdistan region hosts US-led coalition troops, and its capital Erbil is home to a major US consulate complex.

Iran Launches Airstrikes on Kurdish Opposition Groups in Northern Iraq

Iran conducted airstrikes and drone attacks Thursday on bases and facilities belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups positioned across Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region, according to officials from multiple factions. The strikes targeted several strategic locations, with Kurdish groups reporting minor casualties among their ranks.

This latest Iranian escalation comes amid a broader regional conflict, and at a moment when Iranian Kurds view a “historic opportunity” to secure their right to self-determination with potential US backing.

Renewed Iranian Airstrikes on Kurdish Camps

Iranian airstrikes Thursday targeted camps and rear bases of Kurdish opposition groups across the Kurdistan Region. Mardin Zahidi of the Komala organization stated that “two missiles struck our headquarters at 7:15 PM (4:15 PM GMT), injuring two of our members with minor wounds” in Khabat district, Erbil governorate. He attributed responsibility to Iran.

In a parallel operation, a drone struck a facility belonging to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) in Qoysanjaq district less than an hour earlier, according to an official with the party who requested anonymity. The same facility had been targeted by a drone strike on Tuesday.

Iran’s Deliberate Strategy Against Kurdish Opposition

The repeated strikes on Kurdish camps reflect a calculated Iranian strategy aimed at degrading opposition military capabilities. Iran officially classifies these Kurdish groups as “terrorist organizations” and has previously accused them of serving Western and Israeli interests.

Multiple strikes on identical targets suggest Iran seeks to inflict cumulative damage on Kurdish armed capacity while sending a clear deterrent message. However, this approach may backfire by further radicalizing the Kurdish movement and driving opposition groups to seek international allies.

New Kurdish Alliance Targets Tehran

Five Kurdish opposition groups announced last week the formation of a unified political alliance aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic and securing Kurdish self-determination rights. The coalition represents a coordinated effort to leverage current regional circumstances for long-term political objectives.

Khalil Kiani Sanani, spokesman for the Kurdistan Freedom Party, stated that “Iranian regime forces will weaken if American and Israeli attacks continue at the current pace.” He added: “As a result of this weakness, conditions will emerge for the people to rise up, and Kurdish groups will be able to confront what remains of Iranian regime forces.”

Kurdish Aspirations Mirror Iraqi Kurdish Success

Iranian Kurds seek to replicate the achievements of their Iraqi counterparts. Iraqi Kurds secured autonomy starting in 1991 following the Gulf War, when the United States established a no-fly zone to protect them from Saddam Hussein’s forces. Kurdish authority deepened following the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, which toppled Saddam’s regime and established a federal system distributing power between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Adel Bakwan, director of the European Institute for Middle East and North African Studies, noted that “Iranian Kurds want to follow the path of Iraqi Kurds,” pointing out that Kurds understand their nation’s future will be shaped in Washington and Tel Aviv, not in Tehran.

American Support and Strategic Uncertainty

US President Donald Trump stated Thursday to Reuters that he supports Iranian Kurdish fighters launching attacks against Iran. However, he declined to clarify whether the United States would provide air cover for Kurdish factions in potential operations.

Sanani from the Kurdistan Freedom Party said: “If the United States helps us weaken or overthrow the regime in Iranian Kurdistan and protects us, as it did for the Iraqi Kurdistan Region in 1991, we will accept that assistance.”

This position reflects a pragmatic “marriage of convenience” that may prove short-lived, according to Renad Mansour, analyst at Chatham House. Mansour notes this represents “another chapter in a long history of the United States supporting various Kurdish armed groups in different conflicts.”

A History of American Abandonment

Kurds have suffered from repeated US abandonment throughout history. Washington backed Kurdish fighters in Syria against the Islamic State for years but recently announced the end of their role, allowing Syrian forces to advance against them and threaten their positions.

Despite this precedent, Iranian Kurds view current circumstances as a “historic opportunity” to forge an alliance with the United States—one they may never get again—even if future American abandonment remains plausible. This calculation balances potential risks against tangible gains from weakening Tehran’s grip on power.

Regional Complications and Neighboring States

Neighboring countries hold complex positions on the Kurdish question, reflecting their competing geopolitical interests:

Iraq and Security Commitments: Baghdad reaffirmed its commitment to honor its security agreement with Iran to protect their shared border. The Kurdistan Regional Government formally denied involvement in plans to arm or deploy Kurdish opposition forces into Iran, yet Iranian warnings suggest such operations remain possible.

An Iraqi security official stated Iran warned Baghdad that “hundreds of Kurdish fighters may attempt to infiltrate Iran.” However, Kurdish opposition sources confirmed to AFP that no Kurdish opposition forces have yet crossed from Iraq into Iran, though this scenario remains feasible.

Turkey’s Security Concerns: Turkey warned against activities that “could negatively affect peace and stability in the region,” particularly given its efforts to end its conflict with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which officially renounced armed struggle last year after decades of violence claiming roughly 50,000 lives.

Bakwan suggests Iranian Kurds should not view Turkey as an enemy but rather follow the Kurdistan Region’s model, which considers Ankara its strongest ally.

Syria’s Strategic Interests: Syria may welcome any efforts to overthrow the Islamic Republic despite strained relations with Kurdish groups, viewing Iran as a strategic adversary.

Oil Production Halts Following Drone Attack

Kurdistan Regional Government authorities announced Friday the cessation of production at an American-operated oil field after a “terrorist attack” conducted by two drones Thursday evening in the Sarsenk area of Duhok governorate.

The Natural Resources Ministry stated: “An unlawful group in Iraq executed a terrorist attack targeting the HKN oil field, resulting in damage to the facility and halting production.” A security source confirmed two drones struck the field without causing casualties.

The attack reflects a targeted effort against critical economic infrastructure in the region.

Kurdistan’s Slide Into Regional Conflict

Since the war erupted roughly a week ago, Iraqi Kurdistan—enjoying autonomous status—has been directly drawn into the conflict, experiencing drone and missile attacks primarily targeting American installations. Air defenses in Erbil, the region’s capital, have intercepted multiple drones in recent days.

Multiple Iran-aligned factions forming the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” coalition, including Hezbollah Brigades, announced they will not remain neutral and claimed responsibility for attacking American bases with drones.

Economic Consequences for Iraqi Oil Production

An oil company official stated Tuesday that most foreign oil firms have suspended production temporarily as a precaution. Iraq depends on oil revenues for 90% of government income and ranks as OPEC’s second-largest crude exporter at approximately 3.5 million barrels daily.

Continued production halts could inflict significant economic damage on Iraq’s revenues and capacity to fund infrastructure and public services.

Iraq Between Neutrality Wishes and War Entanglement

Iraq, which has enjoyed relative stability after years of conflict, declared its unwillingness to be drawn into regional warfare. Yet it cannot remain insulated from events, having become a theater for reciprocal American-Iranian military operations.

Iraq’s situation reflects deeper state weakness and inability to enforce full sovereignty over its territory, particularly with foreign forces and Iran-aligned factions operating outside central government control.

Conclusion:

Iran targets Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq with repeated strikes while Kurds see a historic window for independence with potential American support. This three-way struggle (Iran, Kurds, and Americans) reflects the region’s deepest geopolitical complexities. Oil production halts and Iraq’s entanglement in conflict raise the stakes for all parties, leaving the future of Iran’s Kurds suspended between hope and risk. The competing interests of regional and global powers ensure that Kurdish aspirations for self-determination remain uncertain and contingent on external forces beyond their control.
