The latest release of court documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has sent shockwaves through political and royal circles in the United Kingdom and the United States. In Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ordered an urgent inquiry into the ties between Peter Mandelson, the former UK ambassador to Washington, and Epstein.

The inquiry follows the release of documents suggesting Mandelson, while serving as a government minister in 2009, forwarded a confidential economic briefing intended for then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown to Epstein. Records also suggest Epstein transferred $75,000 to accounts linked to Mandelson between 2003 and 2004. In response to the revelations, Mandelson has resigned from the Labour Party. Calls are growing for him to be stripped of his membership in the House of Lords, and London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed it is reviewing reports of alleged misconduct in a public office.

The files also shed new light on the connections between Epstein and the British royal family. Emails from Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, revealed a close and familiar relationship with Epstein long after his first conviction for sex crimes. These developments have led to renewed calls for Prince Andrew, who was stripped of his royal titles over his association with Epstein, to testify before the US Congress regarding Epstein’s criminal network.

Across the Atlantic, former US President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have agreed to testify in a US House investigation concerning Epstein. Their agreement averts a potential vote to hold them in contempt of Congress after they initially refused to appear. The couple submitted sworn written statements denying any knowledge of Epstein’s illegal activities.

The fallout has also impacted academic institutions. Queen’s University in Northern Ireland announced it is removing former US senator George Mitchell’s name from one of its institutes due to his documented links with Epstein. Mitchell, who brokered the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal, was referenced numerous times in the newly released files.

The latest release of Epstein files has ignited fresh controversy and official investigations on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, former ambassador Peter Mandelson is now the subject of a government inquiry ordered by the Prime Minister over his close links to the disgraced financier, leading to calls for his removal from the House of Lords. The documents have also intensified scrutiny of the royal family’s connections.

Meanwhile, the Epstein files have prompted significant political movement in the United States. Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are now set to testify before a congressional probe, a move that came only after lawmakers advanced a resolution to hold them in contempt. The repercussions extend to academia, with a prominent university in Northern Ireland disassociating itself from former US senator George Mitchell due to his connections detailed in the documents.
