Syrian Army Announces Imminent Strikes on Kurdish Positions East of Aleppo, Warns Civilians

Syrian government military reinforcements arrive via the international M4 highway to the Dayr Hafir area, east of Aleppo city on January 14, 2026. Syria's army was moving reinforcements east of Aleppo city on January 14, a day after it told Kurdish forces to withdraw from the area following deadly clashes last week. The deployment comes as Syria's Islamist-led government seeks to extend its authority across the country, but progress has stalled on integrating the Kurds' de facto autonomous administration and forces into the central government under a deal reached in March.

The Syrian army on Friday issued formal warnings of impending military strikes on Deir Hafer, a town located east of Aleppo. The military has called on civilians to evacuate the area, stating it will target positions held by Kurdish forces.

In multiple statements, the Syrian military specified that the targeted locations in Deir Hafer are being used by Kurdish forces “as a launching point for their terrorist operations towards the city of Aleppo and its eastern countryside.” This attribution is based on the army’s official announcements.

The warnings follow the recent deployment of Syrian army reinforcements to the Deir Hafer region. This military buildup occurred after Kurdish forces were driven out of Aleppo city last week.
