UK Dismisses Russian Spy Allegations Against Diplomat as "Baseless"

A Russian police officer patrols outside the British embassy building in Moscow on September 13, 2024. Russia's FSB security service on September 13, 2024 announced that the accreditation of six British diplomats had been withdrawn for suspected espionage and for "threatening Russia's security". "As a measure of reprisals to the multiple unfriendly acts of London, the Russian foreign ministry ... has withdrawn the accreditation of six employees from the political department of the British embassy in Moscow," it said in a statement, accusing them of carrying out "subversive activities and intelligence" gathering. The British Foreign Office on Thursday rejected accusations from Moscow that one of its diplomats in Russia was involved in espionage, describing the claims as “malicious and baseless.”

The statement came in response to Russia’s announcement that it was expelling the UK diplomat.

“This is not the first time the Kremlin has made malicious and baseless accusations against our staff,” the Foreign Office stated, adding, “We are carefully considering our options in response.”
