Zelensky urges Trump to bring 'peace through strength' against Russia

A Ukrainian law enforcement officer inspects a crater next to a destroyed perfume and cosmetics manufacturing building following a missile attack in Kharkiv on April 18, 2025, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The fate of several regions of the country occupied by Russian troops is at the centre of diplomatic manoeuvring to find a solution to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to one official, a plan supported by Donald Trump envisages ceding the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia in exchange for a freeze on the southern front in the regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday urged Donald Trump to exert “peace through strength” against Russia, echoing the US leader’s own language ahead of a high-stakes White House meeting.

“Russia can only be forced into peace through strength, and President Trump has that strength. We have to do everything right to make peace happen,” Zelensky wrote on X.
