The Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq announced yesterday that final investigations into the death of Doctor Ban Ziyad in Basra confirmed the cause of death as suicide, ruling out any criminal suspicion in the case.

The decision issued by the Basra Third Investigative Court stated that forensic reports and technical examinations showed no signs of violence or assault on the doctor’s body, and toxicology results did not detect any poisonous or chemical substances. The ruling also noted that voice recordings and messages exchanged between her and the defendant, Omar Dhahi Mustafa, revealed she had been suffering from depression that drove her to take her own life.

The court confirmed that all evidence, including forensic and criminal reports as well as witness statements, did not indicate any criminal act. It concluded that the death was the result of suicide and closed the case permanently due to the absence of evidence of murder. The defendant, Omar Dhahi Mustafa, was released unless wanted in another case.
