The UN’s human rights chief Volker Turk said he was “horrified” by Thursday’s attack outside a British synagogue, calling crimes targeting religious communities “utterly deplorable”.

“I am horrified by today’s reports of an attack at a synagogue in Manchester, UK on Yom Kippur,” the high commissioner for human rights said on X, adding: “Freedom of religion or belief is central to our humanity and must be defended.”
