Monchengladbach and Valencia Sack Their Managers After Poor Results

Borussia Monchengladbach and Valencia both announced on Saturday that they have dismissed their managers after a run of poor results, underlining the pressure clubs face when performances dip early in the season. The decisions came after disappointing starts in the Bundesliga and La Liga, prompting both sides to make quick coaching changes in the hope of turning things around.

In Germany, Monchengladbach parted ways with Eugen Polanski after losing their first three Bundesliga matches of the season. In Spain, Valencia also moved to remove Carlos Corberán, with the team bottom of the La Liga table.

Monchengladbach Changes Its Technical Staff

Polanski Relieved of Duties

Borussia Monchengladbach announced on its official website that it had dismissed head coach Eugen Polanski because of poor results. The club said Jan-Moritz Lichte would take charge of the team on an interim basis until a new manager is appointed, assisted by Markus Gellhaus and the rest of the coaching staff.

Ruwen Schröder, the club’s head of sport, said that despite a good pre-season and some encouraging signs, the team had not produced the results it wanted in the Bundesliga. He added that the latest results led the club to conclude that a change was necessary, and Polanski was therefore relieved of his duties immediately.

A Long Spell Inside the Club

Polanski began his spell at Monchengladbach in October 2021, when he took charge of the club’s under-17 team, before becoming coach of the under-23 side in the summer of 2022. He managed that team in 108 matches over more than three years, then briefly took over the first team in September 2025 after Gerardo Seoane’s departure.

In November of that year, he was appointed head coach on a contract running until 2028, extending a journey that started in the club’s youth system before reaching the senior side.

Monchengladbach Struggles in the Bundesliga

A Poor Start to the Season

Borussia Monchengladbach sits at the bottom of the Bundesliga table after losing its first three matches of the season. The poor start has increased pressure on the club, which is now trying to avoid letting the situation worsen in the coming weeks.

Valencia Joins in and Sacks Corberán

A String of Defeats

In Spain, Valencia announced the dismissal of Carlos Corberán because of poor results, with the club currently bottom of La Liga. The club said in a statement that it had terminated the contracts of Corberán and British executive director Ron Gourlay, two days after a 1-0 loss to Sevilla, which was the team’s fourth consecutive defeat in five matches.

The decision reflects the tension inside the Spanish club, which has not been able to make the expected start to the campaign, leading to growing calls for a coaching change.

Reserve Coach Takes Temporary Charge

Oscar Sánchez, the coach of the reserve team, will take charge of the first team on an interim basis until a new manager is appointed. The club will hope the change gives the side a psychological boost as it looks to recover in the coming rounds.

Corberán Becomes the First La Liga Coaching Casualty

An Early End to a Previously Successful Spell

Corberán, who had been in charge since December 2024, becomes the first coach to be dismissed in La Liga this season. He had helped keep Valencia in the top flight over the previous two seasons, making the current dismissal a direct result of the team’s poor start to the new campaign.

Results Decide the Outcome

The dismissals at Monchengladbach and Valencia show how quickly early-season results can determine a manager’s fate, especially at clubs that cannot afford to fall behind early in the table. Faced with growing pressure from supporters and club officials, both sides chose to move quickly and make a managerial change.

Conclusion:

Saturday brought managerial dismissals at two major European clubs, Borussia Monchengladbach and Valencia, after poor results and disappointing starts in the Bundesliga and La Liga. As both clubs look to rescue their seasons with temporary coaching solutions, the next few matches will be crucial in determining whether these decisions pay off.
