Middle East war sports disruption has intensified across several major international events, affecting football, tennis, and motorsports within days. The escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran combined with political turmoil in Washington is reshaping global sporting calendars and raising concerns for millions of fans preparing to travel in the coming months.

A series of cancellations, security alerts, and travel disruptions has highlighted how the war is extending far beyond the battlefield, impacting athletes, organizers, and supporters across multiple continents. The situation coincides with rising tensions around the 2026 World Cup, set to open in just under 100 days.

World Cup preparations shaken by US politics and regional conflict

Washington’s political climate and the war on Iran have clouded the image of the United States as host of the largest World Cup in history. President Donald Trump’s return to office brought sweeping immigration crackdowns and confrontational foreign policies that have raised concerns for fans and national teams.

Trump ordered large-scale airstrikes on Iran last Saturday, killing Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The attack triggered fears of extended regional instability. Within hours, Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj warned that Iran could withdraw from the tournament, stating that “we cannot look forward to the World Cup with hope.”

Tourism has also suffered. US hotel bookings have dropped sharply, and the sector now sees the nearly seven million expected World Cup visitors as crucial for recovery. Yet the administration’s visa freezes have complicated travel for fans from 75 countries including Iran, Haiti, Senegal, and Ivory Coast.

• Declining tourism and political tensions
• Uncertainty over participation of some national teams
• Visa restrictions impacting fans from multiple regions

FIFA president Gianni Infantino acknowledged the difficult global climate without mentioning the war directly. He emphasized that the tournament remains a moment for nations to come together despite political divides.

Immigration fears and domestic unrest in the US

Trump’s aggressive immigration policies have renewed fears among visitors. Two US citizens were killed by ICE agents in recent operations, deepening concerns that law enforcement could target fans based on appearance or language.

The suspension of tourist visas for Haitians has made it nearly impossible for supporters to enter the country, further affecting turnout.

Tennis world hit by cancellations and stranded players

The tennis season has faced major upheavals. Multiple players including Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev were stranded in Dubai after mass flight cancellations caused by Iranian missiles and drones.

Two tournaments in the UAE were cancelled after drone debris fell near oil facilities. A fire in an oil field around 15km from an ATP Challenger event in Fujairah forced play to stop. Players were moved to safety while ATP suspended the event.

Reactions from players in Indian Wells

Athletes at Indian Wells expressed concern. Jack Draper said he had escaped Dubai on one of the last available flights. American player Ben Shelton described it as “brutal” and said the situation dominates conversations among players.

Men’s world number two Jannik Sinner stated that safety comes before sport and urged the return of stability to the region.

Motorsports and regional tournaments postponed

The conflict also halted the opening round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in Qatar. The Qatar 1812km race, scheduled for late March, has been postponed to the second half of 2026 due to the “evolving geopolitical situation.”

Other regional competitions have faced similar fates including Asian Football Confederation matches, the Euroleague U18 basketball qualifier in Abu Dhabi, and Pakistan Shaheens’ cricket tour in the UAE.

Formula One monitoring regional instability

The FIA said its priority remains the safety of teams and staff as airspace closures disrupted travel to Melbourne for the opening Grand Prix.

Formula One still has four races scheduled across the Gulf region this season including Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in April, then Qatar and Abu Dhabi later in the year.

Mexico violence adds further complications

Mexico, one of the World Cup’s co-hosts, faces security challenges unrelated to the regional war. A major cartel leader was killed in a military operation, triggering widespread violence across several regions including Guadalajara which is set to host four matches.

Officials have insisted that the matches will proceed safely. However, recent clashes left dozens dead and forced partial lockdowns in affected cities.

Conclusion:

From football to tennis and motorsports, the Middle East war has begun to reshape global sports schedules and travel plans. With the World Cup approaching and tensions spreading across multiple regions, organizers face mounting pressure to ensure safety and stability for fans and athletes around the world.
